georgetown herald 22 ftaln sttt s georgetown onterlo wit c hbv fiemtvlief a0b4 thursday november 10th 19m editorial comment need ambulancemen georget volunteer ambulance fiervtte one of georgetowns most efficient group einc hi formehon almost ten years ago h in urgent need of mqre members the gvas waa bom of necessity when private imbufonce service found it un profitable to continue a group of public- spirited men tackled the problem and came up with whet it believed to be me first wen organization in canada an unpaid dedi cated group of volunteer well trained and organized to provide 2 hours service to ft community as can happen some of the origmal enthusiasm has waned members have mo- acquiring maturity the valedictory address at me high school commencement posed a question which could be good subject for debate the leek of maturity among graduates and whether this could be acquired by allow ing more responsibility to students in their high school years a the speaker now a university student was slanting bra talk along the lines of those entering another level of education where suddenly there are few restriction v study or not if you wish attend classes when you want to no parent to tell you when to go to bed when to get a haircut little restriction on moral codes the problem ts a real one and yet seems to be one which defies a solution for maturity n a tricky word a state of mind at best which somehow has to be acquired police accommodation for more then a year the question of improved accommodation for the george town police department has been an urgent one earlier this year a decision was made to erect a housetype dwelling dose to downtown and tenders were actually ask ed for the ob since then there has been lima comment at council meetings and a dozen or more policemen have been oper ating from headquarters designed for only a minimum force a solution must certainly be found and rf it is impossible to build adequate quarters has council ever thought of acquir ing an older residence which could fill the bill ved away become engaged in other acrlvl ties which preclude the hours necessary to serve at an ambulancemen a mam difficulty has been the night shfir jin onerous task for volunteers who must lose tleep m the course of duty when mernbership is not sustained at a maximum level the problem increases because faith ful members tend to become overworked perhaps there are men who have mov ed to town recently who would be interes ted m this type of public service it has its own reward in the satisfaction of doing a necessary job helping to ease suffering human and get them to hospital for treat ment as fast as possible with skilful direction er home some trial and error and a lot of luck that the mis takes which are bound to be made will have no important lastmg affect on the charac tor being moulded perhaps it is the universities themsel ves which should take a second look at the system a young person entering the com mercial world after leaving high school must certainly mature in a hurry and not by being left to his own devices a business office a factory a store bas definite rules for employees one is not allowed to show up for work as the spirit moves him he has a definite pb to do and his responsibil ities are checked by a higher authority there are few places in life where one can lead an uninhibited unrestricted axis tence outside universities a police office should be in a location where it can serve the most people handily and in georgetown this should be down town a few years ago there was talk of having a substation in the dekex shopping plaza and with this we aro also in full agreement as two of the mam areas of police activity where trouble is apt to occur there should be as strong as possible protection available it is probably too late in the civic year for anything to happen now but we would hope that the 1967 council would place the matter of police accommodation on its early agenda how to live with a motbudget in thi mail bag wants water hydro services combined in one commission sugar and spice by bill smiley wheres that 25th hc4 1 byron street october 24th
