training a pitcher is as good as his legs therefore he must do cons iderable running to get in shape and do it gradually a pitchers two greatest assets regardless of how good a fast ball and curve a pitcher may have ho will be wild tin less he is able to concentrate and relax if he does not his arm and legs will not coordm ate and he will be wild no one has aver been a successful wild pitcher if thcro is a short cut to success it is practice practice and practice always work on your weakness- getting control on the sidelines and in bat ting practice you must concen trate on throwing every pitch at the middle of the plate your arms and legs must coordinate the more vou concentrate the more your arm and legs will co ordinate and the more relaxed you will be all young pitchers with a tendency to be wild should pitch batting practice every dj or in some way be on the mound every other day the mound is the closest thing to getting into the ball game a lot of pitchers have good control on the sidelines but when they pitch batting practice or get into a ball game they arc wild until you are able to concent rate and relax you will never have good control additional sport news on following page if you re moving this spring rent a tilde n van or pickup by tha hour day or wak cmll andrew murray motors 41 guelph st 77m control during ball game records show that 50 of the hitters will take the first pitch take advantage of that percent age it is impossible for a pit cher to be successful in any league unless he is able to get ahead of the hitter h you try to pitch too fine you will always be in trouble you cannot do a good job of pitching until you get ahead of the hitter make that first pitch a strike with something on il remember the percentage and also that the hit ter can only hit fair balls off of you any time you keep the hit ter from hitting a ball bard you have done a good job re cords show that every time yoo throw a strike with something on the ball it is over 12 1 odds that the hitter will not get a hit how tojuux call it psychology or whatever you wish but- wherever there is fear there is tension that means you are not relaxed your arm and legs will not coordinate and you will not have good control important 1 concentrate on the exact spot you arc going to pitch to 2 don t be afraid you will walk the hitter 3 dont be afraid he will get a hit 4 be conscious of using the cat cher as a strike zone target next week we will talk about basic pitches control secrets and pitching techniques robert r hamilton optometrist office hours daily
