lamprey problem no answer has yet been found lake when the dam waa built to kelso lakes lamprey eel problem director dave murray of the halton region conserva tion authority said this week on the other hand mr mur ray added no sign of the des tructive eels has been seen so far this year in or near the north halton beauty spot lamprey eels which wiped out a million dollar fishing in dustry in lake ontario now pose a threat to the 17500 spec kled and rainbow trout with which kelso lake is stocked the eels equipped with sucker and a circle of incurved teeth grow to a foot in length and are capable of attacking we found throe dead trout in kelso lake last year murray said the biggest which weighed 5 pounds 2 oun ces still had a lamprey stuck to it and there were two other circular marks on its side an attempt was made to pre serve this fish which at inches was the largest trout the hrca has ever caught in kcl so lake but decomposition had gone too far lamprey are lake denizens hut in spring they run up fctreims to spawn on gravel bot toms some arc thought to have been trapped in kelso several years ago an effort was made earlier this year to trap the lampreys as they moved upstream from kelso lake to spawn screening was placed across the lake inlet and a boxlike trap was set up in hope that lampreys would blindly workjhtirway into the opening but the operation was hamp ered by the heaviest spring flooding in years mr murray said the screens picked up so much debris they broke under the strain and not a single urn- proy was trapped maybe the lampreys spawn ed in the lake this spring fish 30 times their own size murray mused or maybe we lost the trap before they start ed to go upstream its some thing we havent resolved yet but well try again next spring kelso lake
