some notes on old georgetown back in tha twenties a form r herald publisher n d war fen contributed a noitaljilc oii on the old days in gtorgc town both those who arc newer residents and those v how roots go back to thoic days will fljoy these reminiscence this is the last of three in lulments i mr warren article then ww once a grist mill la georgetown and fitty years or more ago the proprietor was lawrence hose with a well respected family long since moved from town the old mill was situated a little south of the remains o the old radia hoad near w h kentncrs ofli e and by the way opposite where the handsome and well equipped new post office now stands this reminds me that hiss annie rose one of this family attended at the same time as myself the model school at brampton in pre paration for school teaching hiss rose faced the problem of teaching with greater com posure than i did however aa at youth i did the best i could and when the reports were is sued it was found that we both fttth others passed his rose immediately got a school situation and to my surprise my application for hendersons school 7th line was accepted many of the boys were larger and some of them older than i but we worked together ge- serally and got through at ie close of the first year tho trustees george h kennedy lewis stull and john filler had a meeting at which i was pre sent and they decided to in crease my salary from 400 co to 42500 that meeting re mains one of the bright mo stents- of my life at the end of the next year there was an other thrill for again up went my salary another 2500 wuh the money i saved during those three years plus 1he price of some dandy thoroughbred cal yes i had helped to raise and that had been sold a few years previously i purchased the georgetown herald on the instalment plan of course stayed with it about twenty fi e years and then the herald property became the possession of mr j m moore who pub lishes a clean newsy paper wcl deserving of the liberal support it receives going down mill street on the way to the new cost office 4 prosperous meat business wit earned on by j m bucl his was a record of obugemcnt and honest weight harry spem was the hotel feeeper near the corner of guelph and water streets his hotel had a name for hosplti lity aid plenty harry himself itked to go out occasionally with his rifle and his two hand l some hounds to which he was fondly attached this did not prevent him however from dealing severely with them when one day they attacked a fanners flock of sheep he i loudly called them back but they wouldnt respond he call d repeatedly but they continu d their attack and when thev did coming running toward him he ahot them both at the corner right there was ft bake shop with an old and re apected resident james mead ow the owner back again to mill street there was david gant barber in a down stairs shop of the hotel 1 wonder where his son paul went to and where he is now frank short also a barber was just across the street back part of the thomson store he left town and went into basin ess in toronto where i used to see him occasionally but not sow for some time sixty years ago or more they th me there was an envelope factory in the hollow in the vicinity of the new post office cross water street and farther aouth east probably near where rlrhariey kays factory now stands one of the very oldest facto ries in the town with an un failing record for reliability is that of the qayfoot compa i ay 1 well remember john b tatrfoot who established the business many year ago- and this day the good name of the earlier year has been strongly maintained the old original paper mill n tfaa credit was just about baste to the later prosperity of ceergetown the four barber brothers came to town from du friend of the high school who had the wet fare of teachers and students constantly in mind george h kennedy long connected with the council and always a stal wart worker in the cause of temperance charles ran for years associated with the school boards and always interested in the educational affairs of the town and so they came and went as we come and go in my scrap book i find this little
