georgetown herald pubhshod by homo newspapers limited 22 main street south georgetown ontario w c biihn publisher thursday november 2nd 1967 editorial comment approaching 13000 with georgetown population at ihe end of september 12623 one can assume that today there are close to 1 3 000 resid ents new subdivisions at the east and west ends of town have been briskly selling homes a new apartment building is rapid ly filling up and the census figures are out of date even as they are released the town is now over five times its size of a quarter century ago located as tt is in the industrial hub of ontario il will continue to expand rapidly and wih soon be reaching city status the newest growth has not brought ihe problems which the first postwar influx did in those days georgetown had i ttle to protect it from subdividersxand drainage and road problems occupied a giant share of council s attention it was also a period when the town changed character rapidly from a very small community where people knew each other practical education things like the model united nation which georgetown high school hosted rec ently are an important part of secondary schooling for too many years extracurricular activities in the schools focussed too much on sports and cultural pursuits tended to take a minor role now without underplaying the physi cal side other activities are coming lo the fore and rightly so for is it not our duty to prepare our young people as well as dangerous corner changing of the through traffic flow at the main and maple corner has created a temporarily dangerous situation especial ly for local drivers who have grown accus tomed to maple being the stop street maple has now been made a through street and motorists approaching it on mam street should use particular caution in com intj- lo a full stop at the same lime one should not regard maple as a throughway end barrel up or down the h l without a cautious eye on what the mam st motor tsts are doing one day this week we paused on ma intimately to more of a city atmosphere there was some resentment not o much from the older residents as from the newer ones who had moved from cities for a rural atmosphere only to find the city pursuing them here the oldtimers for their part were caught up in the excitement of change it s different today once yoit pass the five or siiy thousand mark a town loses its small town character another few thousand people do not essen tiahy change the character the town now has better subdivision controls and there is a minimum of prob lems for home owners in newly created res dentia districts and new residents moving to a com munity of this size are not looking so much for the bucolic rural life used to cities they do not expect to be welcomed too heartily by their neighbours and are content to get in the swim of community life more gradu ally possible for their adult years with the p oper combination of education trose participating in the model un and those who attended the sessions could not fail to benefit by the training received the students were getting a living lesson in debate and discussion in human nature and how to handle tricky situations such things rightly deserve the atten tion of school authorities and should share equal b llmg w th football and other recrea i onal activities pie luckily as iwo motorists drove right through from the savage glance we got from one as we started to cross it was obvious that he had not yet seen the new stop sign and was cursing us for breaking the law we would suggest further improve ments at the corner a large warning sign slop ahead should be used on mam south farther back from the corner and warning dangerous intersection should be posted i on both sides of maple to slow down those who have no way of knowing they are crossing a buy streel 7049538 addition for milton school milton district high school ed tenders or a proposed adtb board lust week
