in the mail bag not against but what it 9 guelph street nov 19th 1867 dear sir i feel that you hive done your readers a monumental disservice by your editorial ot november 16th entitled cen orship is necessary in that passage you referred to my valedictory address earlier this month by quoting out of con text the phrase unfair and unjust your interpretation of this phrase was that censorship of a high school newspaper in 1966 was the object of my en ticism had joir examined more care fully the text of my speech however you would have dis covered that the real meaning of my comments was this the censorship that was employed was because of what it preven ted from publication unfair and unjust to be specific as i was in your presence at the commencement the ban on al discussion of educational poll cy by th student newspaper was a regrettab e decision for which the administration georgetown district high gchool should jave bsgn pub licly criticized if this had been t ie sum total of your comments the situation would have been bad enough but your inept comparison to the reprint of the realist porn o graph y in the newspapers of two prominent canadian umver sities was simply inexcusable before you start to make accus ations of this sort against the studnts of georgetown you really must be sure of jour position please read the text of my address which i deliver ed to your reporters after it was given nowhere will you find any statement that disa trees with the premise that the principle of censorship tself is unfair and unjust i censorship censors you rightly accuse the editor- of the aforementioned unlver sity presses if irresponsibility the fault they are to be criti deed about la the printing of too much news however this brings up a question in my mind a question of not en oinjh news in your own publi cation since you were in a tendance at commencement 67 and witnessed the spontaneous ovation my remarks gained sur my you must realize that at the high school there are many is sues that a responsible press could consider none of these is slanderous or insignificant the refusal to allow the sud ent body to ratify or amend the administrations constitution is a basic question of the denial of civil rights to ten per cent of thfs towns population yet you chose to ignore this impor tant question along with many others like student apathy the image of georgetown in its young people minds and stud ent opinions about the educa tional system in general judging from your the editorial you would he surprised at student response to your editorial not only were many outraged but the major ity realized that i had been dangerously misquoted this responsible reaction har dly bears out your description of youth as scatter brained and immature those who are have not been helped by the attitude of their societies for example the editors of the university newspapers may vctj well be rebelling against the sort of censorship that i crili cue unfair and unjust but not therefore incorrigible yours respectfully roger smith herald editorial was in poor taste november 20lh 1907 ib market street dear sir i wish to begin b making two points clear initially i am of the opinion that the platform of our high school commenc ment exercises does not seem q me to be ihc most npprop riate place from which to voice a protest against school cen worship secondly i am neither approving nor condemning roj er smith s address nevcrth less it is just possible that thh seemed he only opportunity left to this highly gifted young idealist to say what he ob- ously felt comnellcd to say however that may be and whe ther ro was right or wrong your criticism of his democra tic though untimclj protest in the same paragraph as that in which jou affi n d the ncces sity to c nscr o enity seems to mc to be n the lowest pos sible tab c the juxtaposition of the two en irely divergent typ es of judgment involved seems to mc odious i shall find jour publication of this advers opinion of your editorial highly commendable yo irs sincerelv mary h hardie playboy esquire how about adult censorship 16 queen street nov 16 196t bravo mcgiil regarding your editorial com ment thursday november 16 adult censorship is necessary well i started thinking you know this adult censorship might be a good thing for us young people but as i have been taught i look before 1 leap i went to one of the stores in town and looked over some good examples of adult censor ihip i came equipped started taking notes playboy es quire hush flash and i could have named more if the lead on my pencil hadn t broken on the corner of one book shelf i noticed a magazine pick ed it up and turned to the centre spread strictly by ac cident i might add well there was a girl wearing only a small piece of cloth so i thought to myself what would she be wear ing if we hadn t adult censor ship oa saj quote if older stu dents in responsible university positions cannot be trusted to use discretion and stay within bounds of good taste one can ot expect less mature young stcrs to have acquired the judg ment which only years can bring well sir if those magazines mentioned above are prime ex smplcs i shall increase tnv search for the fountain of youth to i can stay a youngster the point is gentlemen the mcglll and toronto papers did not print these just to arouse public opinion they did it to make students think tho students start to ask such quest ions as did that really happen in dallas and was president kennedy such a great person as he has been made up to be wins judgement in case against town 9 john street east november 16 1967 to the editor i would like lo thank those members of georgetown council specially our mayor foi fore mc me to take court action ag ainst the town of georgetown thereby malting rt possible for me to receive judgement to the amount of my claim i hope th s acts as a foundation for the m idents of the town of george town who have a similar prob lem m the future a special thanks lo mr walter somnka for his defense in court on my thank jou for your ptper space hugh hoot wjuc 1 would bet my life that half the people creating such a stink and forming an opinion of this haven t even read the article in closing sir i would like to say after adult censorship of this letter i hope there are a few pieces left to make people people stop and think if people can t even think without being censored or crit ldzed then karl marx you old beggar you won jim egcrlit just some freedom in this teeners plea 75 market st nov 17 1967 dear mr editor in regard to your censorship necessary editorial history sees that censorship has never re lly happened hit ler tried it and now they arc trying it in greec what good has come out of it in looking at mans four basic rights the first is the right to freedom of expression wasn t this what those other papers were doing just expressing themselves in the best way possible you as editor and as a respectable middleclass minded georup town citizen mention the arti cle as obscene offensive and in bad taste shouldn t it be myself or maybe even my par ents that set the standards for what 1 read have you the ed ilor the right to forward jusl one view of censorship complete freedom in the high school paper is lmpossrble we and i think i speak for most just want some freedom in the i articles that are printed at present the newspaper is put together by us but anything that docs not please the ad ministration is taken out we j do not even get the opportunity j to defend our actions in print ing the article in the first place we can not call the high school paper a student paper yes we assemble it do all the work reporting drawing etc but it must he called an admin istration paper for we have n t say no voice and no opinion at all in its contents last year a paper was a com plete flop the students were put to blame because it d dn l sell who wants to buy an un magi native completely cen sored paper i am sorry to say that the people in georgetown all of them are smallminded com pletely predead and possess no ability to express an opinion or take sides i am glad that i
