one of these early demonstrations was described in the brampton conservator of sept 21st 1877 a friday the item prescr ved by rev thomas hcndersop in his scrapbook must have one of a series in 1884 a office of mr p l woods the trial was made between here and strat ford a distance of 70 miles first the communication was earned on by way of ordinary conversa i ion in a loud tone and afterwards by singing though the atmosphere was not favor able for the experiment at thr time of the trial the words ipoken at either end were quite distinct most of the time and the music 6f th songs so plain that any one familiar with the tune could readily catch the melody the sweet bye and bye old lans syne red white tnd bl ic and many other well know pieces were tr ed and lung with great success two ladies for the bell telephone for haldimand halton and went worth counties there is no cw dence of telephones having been leased by any georgetown resident prior to ths ineorpora tlnn of the bell telephone umpiny of canada on april 20vh i860 there li evidence in an old letter book of the bell coropa ny that early in october 1882 barber brothers or georgetown rent jl letter of inquiry to the head office montreal which waswctobcr lhh 1682 refer red to mr hugh c baker man ager of the company s ontario department whether barber brother paper mills ordered a pair of telephones or even more extensive service linking them to their business is not known probably the letter was one inquiring as to telephon- rates or perhaps asking when georgetown was likely to be given telephone service it h interesting to know that as early as 1882 interest was being manifested by an impor tant georgetown business in telephone service for many canadian businessmen were still dubious as to the practical use fulness of telephone service and reluctant to spend money for it it was still a novelty which aroused mingled won derment and ridicule with the majority of people though hre and there it was already prov ing useful and orders were co ming in daily or almost daily from here and there on first line however the business vq not sufficient to pay adequate ly for the relatively great ex pens of labour and equipment necessary for building new long distance lines on may 1 1884 the company s founder and then vice president and mana ging director the senior charles fleetwood sise confided in a letter to mr baker that our construction ac in ontario cannot be very extensive this year however some of the money was spent on a line built during 1884 running from toronto to guelph through wen- ton brampton georgetown and acton records indicate that then- was a telephone exchange esta bhshed in georgetown not long before november 7 1884 when head office acknowledged a remittance of 1 00 from j h jackson the georgetown agent it was according to one rec ord located in the store or mr jackson who had a bookselling and stationery business on mam street a later directory 19011 gives mr jackson s business as books stationery and hous furnishings probably the bus incss had broadened out before this and by april 1907 ac cording to the directory the business was jtcksons depart mental store
