john bel lamys proposal to extend the library from its present 3 500 sq ft to 10000 sq feet the proposal as made at a joint meeting of the library board and council last week the extension of library ser vices itself found no opposition but opinion differed on the question of extending the libra ry at its present location or es tablishing a branch library in the east end one point on which all agreed was the need for esquesins twp either through grants or an increased membership rate for tounsli p residents to pay a share of the costs twenty uer cent of the library members ootne from outside the town the brief presented by the library board chairman stat ed there is enough space on the present site for a two storey building of six thousand sq ft the building is foreseen as a separate one parallel to the present one facing market st the entrance way would form a connecting bridge between the buildings the bord felt this would be the most economical method since there would be no site cost very i ttle interference with the operation of the libra ry and no problem of moving books from one part to the oth er in reply to que i ow frnmi co inc llors abo t i branch h rarj n the cast en i mr be- limy cxpla nod that c to n library service as a whole would suffer since there would hare to be a duplication of the same books in one centra library be said a comprehensive book collection can be built up in cluding duplicate copies of books in high demand and a worth while reference section he contended a small branch would be relatively expensive to staff and awkward to adnunis tcr the brief further pointed out that there are only two towns in ontario with populations un der thirty thousand with a branch library it is generally considered uneconomical to run a branch library unless the population is between thirty and that almost any location m town fifty thousand said the brier mr bellamy also pointed out would be too far for most peop le to walk cr roy ballentine reminded the group that the high school board have made plans for a h brary in tho new addition with an entrance on the street for public use librarian miss m nazcr won dered if it could be a public library during school hours cr ballentine raised the question of parking at the pre sent library location claiming any further building could cause a parking nuisance the meeting closed with all promising to consider the facts from every angle close vote turns down rezoning for apartment opinion that an apartment would be good tax revenue for the town and that council would only be doing what it has done in a number of similar cases he said those who com plain would have a chance to air their views before the wn tano municipal board as such a bearing is necessary in mat lers of rezoning it appears this is the only means the town has to gain this type of tax revenue for the property said cr smith he said that fears of traffic haz ards to children and dust prob lems ated by opponents are not valid objections cr ballentine said mr hyde is willing to guarantee no fur ther building will be done on the balance of the property where the apartment is plan ned woman baby
