11164- piffle movement ac as candy- stripers at the georgetown and district memorial hospital the term comes from the candy striped uniform worn by tb young volunteers the rangers also help the gniders and leaders with brow nie packs and guide companies and help with community ser vices such as canvassing for charitable organizations and helping in the first aid room during the bantam hockey tournament rangers have learned their responsibility to the commun ity from the day they attended their first brownie meeting this theme of giving service- is stressed right through the movement plus acton and hilton make up hatton division this years re gistration of members in the division totalled nearly 900 this number includes approxi mately 90 leaders and other adults who belong to the organ ization the leaders are all volunteers who have been trai ned by the local organizations to work with specific age grps the training department is busy all the time there is a very high turnover of leaders because of the transient nature of this area and also because a lot- of leaders go back to work and rop volunteer activities a love of children is import ant in a leader but so is wil lingness to come with an open mind the organization is trying to convince leaders that rigid and formal rules are outdated and that should use awareness and imagination through the awarding of in terest badges once called prof iciency badges the movement hopes to encourage young mem bers in hobbies which may ul timately lead to careers but one field in which the youngest members dont need any train ing is in sales brownies make best cookie salesmen because they are so enthusastic rare are the house holders who can resist their ap peal when it comes cookie sell ing time these threa local the funds collected by selling cookies are used for buying districts badges and also to help finance localand provincial administra tion guide activities do not end when summer arrives guides from this division organizations in addition to lo cal people help to defray the costs of visits to camps in other countries but the girls work hard to pay tbeir twn expenses the grl guides of canada will celebrate its 60th birthday next year but it works hard to keep its aims and its images in tune with the times even the uniform is periodically redes igned to make sure it stays not too far away from the look of current fashion for the 60th birthday cele brations the guiding movement has chosen the theme carousel canada and as the name im plies it will involve an exchange of visits between canadian gui- dd or a going around of girls from one province to another ts wua- brownies worlds best talesmen corrects misconceptions about canadian indians 1 could never become just a brown skinned white nan in my neart i am an indian i al- j ways will be said mr john thomas an acting chief of the npotka tribe on the west coast of british columbia speaking at a public meeting in george town recently this meeting sponsored by the bahais of oakville and georgetown gave residents an opportunity to become more aware of the plight of canadas native peoples and their need to have pride in their own id entity and ctfltujre difficulty in communication as one of the reasons which mr thomas felt had caused the white man to view the indian as a second class citizen with a paganistic background he illustrated the point with a story of the indian who reluc tantly sold a horse to a white man with the comment he doesnt look good only when the horse walked into a tree did the white man realize th indian wasnt speaking of the horses appearance mr thomas drew many par allels between the old indian religious practices and those of the bahai faith to which be and many of the native peo ple now belong among these was the belief that a prophet will come who will unite all people that if individuals ar gue about religion they arc both wrong that all consulta tion should begin and end with prayer and the power of an all encompassing creator the indian has always known re marked mr thomas that he is not going to a happy hunt ing ground- -but- to a spiritual world the tragedy said mr tho mas is that the indian has lost much of the values- and culture of his forefathers yet does not identify or in many cases is not allowed to identify with the values and culture of white society citing his own- exper ience on leaving the reserve to attend school and then re turning mr thomas remark ed i knew too much to stay on the reserve and wasnt well enough equipped to live away from it he mentioned that hollywood and school textbooks have combined to give us a com pletely distorted view of indian culture and practices these should be taught by indians to both indian and white to create in the whdte man a respect for the values of this way of life and for the indian a pride jn his heritage it is generally believed that the indian worshipped the sun and the animals while in fact he worshipped the creative force represented by them this has led to great misunder standing of the basis of the indian religions the lntpr re lation of spiritual and physical wellbeing was taught early to indian children and their en tire social structure was based on these beliefs the womens institute held their meeting on tuesday after- noonat two oclock on feb 18 at the home of mrs wilfred bird are floor ed by hard work its lack of ap preciation gets us down and it contained some very true thoughts the special speaker miss joanne mackie home econo mics teacher at stewarttown senior public school spoke on and demonstrated making dairy foods more appealing her two foods were cheese and milk which can be used in so many ways protein food toughens with heat so cheese must be cooked moderately not too hot milk is needed all thro life as our bodies need calcium good cooks say they count on cheese for the easy way it adds flavour to many a dish and it is not only an economical food but of fers good eating and health to all its devotees miss mackie used two large french loaves cut lengthwise and spread with butter and slices of cheddar cheese placed in the oven and when time was to in elude representatives of organ ized labour on its advisory edu cational committee secretary c c dahraer was authorized to protest the omission to the board g g heym council presid ent said that it was usual to include representatives of em ployees and employer groups on bodies of this kind the recent announcements that a bank manager an auto motive parts salesman an ad vertising account executive a lawyer general manager and production manager have been appointed cannot lead us to the conclusion that these people truly represent an employee group said heym there can be no doubt that these people truly represent an employer group said heym we take exception to these appointments since with the new regional scheme some pro gress should have been made and organized labor representa tives felt that the time had ar rived to make the regional board aware of the fact that the labor council represents emplo yee groups to some extent the council president stated that organized labor had sup ported vocatiosal schools in this area as far back as the late 1950s and had worked diligent ly toward their establishment he noted the building of the gordon e perdue high school where vocational subjects are taught surely the proposal of fac ing reality should be seriously considered by those responsible for the school board wishes to face the future and its demand ing role in same said heym urge members attend annual hospital meet by las clark the annual hospital associa tion meeting will be held on thursday march 13th in the hospital cafeteria full details of the roeetingappear elsewhere in this issue of the herald it is- af matter of record that over 1000 local people and or ganization and industries are life members by virtue of their donations of 50 or over this certainly is the nucleus of a big group 1ut unfortunately a very small percentage of this group take an active interestin the annual election of officers and meeting anyone of course is eligible for membership and can obtain a yearly membership for 500 merely by asking for one at the hospital office the people of georgetown showed their interest in the hospital by supporting its build ing and the very difficult fin ancing of it where one third of the amount needed had to be raised locally and this was at a time when georgetown was in the throes of a very serious recession the whole communi ty supported the project and the financing was completed with no real difficulties thus it seems a shame hat more people do not take an ac tive interest in the daily oper ation of tihe public building in which they have such a large financial interest so we do hope that a large number of residents will see fit flowers for all occasions wedding arrangements corsages a specialty cut flowers and
