iuijr i m seeing the world part 10 lanistan bazaars food interesting for globetrotters we arrived in mashed wed- nesday noontime freezing cold and negotiated with an afghani who spoke english for a bus to the border we were very for- tunate to catch one leaving immediately for a town suppos edly near the border the roads were very bad sometimes nonexistent with rivers flow- injf across here and there and great trenches and potholes but we got through somehow past herds of camels and gentlemen in vast baggy panta loons- turbans and mouldy h sheepskins and walled villages with litue domed houses the border town turned out to be a long way from the bor der and the bus couldnt be counted on so we were con- templating five in a sleeping bag in order to keep warm ov ernight however luck was on 1 our side we met our friend greg the american boy in customs we always meet sum at strange times like in the bazaar after we were supposed to have left for mashed he doesnt believe us now when we say we are going some- where there were lots of eur opeans there a french cou ple with bicycles who were on their way to australia and two english couples in a land rover and three danish boys with a big land rover most people who couldnt get lifts were ask- ing trucks etc for rides but greg chatted up the danes to take the six of us to herat we crushed into the car with all our gear and had a great time it took ages to got thru all the formalities on both sides of the border so didnt reach herat until quite late the hotel ra ther resembled a stable but i slept fantastically well on the best air mattress in the world courtesy of the danes as i had not slept on the bus except for three hours or so we went to atea house for a hot drink be fore bed it was a strange place too all the walls cov ered with a weird conglomera tion of posters and pictures and a boy cranking an old record player an afghani juke box we didnt have any afghani money after that and had all kinds or trouble at the door telling them we would leave ir anian money for deposit until we got to the tank next day we just gradually filtered away leaving chris behind until she realized that she had better leave too we went to- sleep with the strains of a very bad brass band coming- thru the window i think thety were practicing at 2 am most of the chops were still open as well we had late breakfast for 25 afghanis about 30c two eggs bread butter jam tea and eventually got on the road to kandahar by 230 we made poor time because of heavy rain didnt arrive until quite late about midnight and stay ed at a poor hotel because it was all we could find then yes terday we went to a haman to set clean again and then went to the bazaar there were beautifully embroiderrd shirt fronts waist coats hats scar- vse and so on we went to a tiny shop and bargained and bargained there were beauti ful pieces of embroidery that i would have loved to buy but even after bargaining they were about 5 so i resisted and bought a second hand shirt for 200 afghanis a little over 2 that had embroidery across the front i can have a crepo blouse made when i get back which should be nice ouhof in front of the shops however the second hotel was very nice for 16 afghanis per night we had a large room wjth good beds an easy chair and an electric heater that threw off enough heat when the power was strong enough to take off the chill we or dered tea individual pots whenever we felt like it for about two afghanis and order ed our dinner wo nights chicken and rice beef and rice and had a grand time being waited on my hotel bill inclu ding 3- breakfasts 2 dinners and 2 nights was about 180 kabul is much more expen sive very touristy jeally were paying 40 afghanis a night and eating at posh hotels for under a dollar steak and chips last night there are an- amazing number of western europeans and americans here lots of hippies looking hairy and interesting our danish friends are striking vikings asbjorn and john are 6 ft blonde blueeyed and bearded oli is 6 ft 6 ins and dark so all together we look liko an arctic expedition in compari son to the thin woak looking long haired types were much too healthy looking really i think we may be in for a bit of trouble fcho as sheila and chris have come down with something nasty like dysentry and well probably catch it as well we left kandahar at about 745 for kabul with a stop at gazni to look at afghani coats i most of the time we drove past desert and mountains with the odd camel caravan to add in- j terest patti bought a coat at gazni tan suede covered with moss green embroidery with long haired white goat fur on the inside she traded heri khaki jacket and added 70 ai- ghanis a little under 10 the last time she was there she bought a coat for 280 so i j guess there have been a lot of tourists thru since then i was tempted to buy one as they are very warm but none captured my fancy since weve arrived in kabul i it has been cold and rainy and not very inspiring for sight-see- 1 ing mostly weve been playing i tourist eating in big hotels i and looking at everybody else we enjoyed the drive to ista- lif despite the cold wet weath er because the town itself is one of the most picturesque places ive seen it is set od terraced hillsides above a ri ver valley and is only approa chable by driving in a curving roundabout way through the surrounding hills this gives many good views of the town from different angles every where there was some kind ot tree that had bright rustyred leaves and another kind of tree in the valley that was tall and willowy green we all felt that it must be beautiful there in the summer oli said he would like to spend a couple of mon ths touring around afghan istan when the weather was good me too but they are on their way to austraiiaso it will be a while i suppose greg has gone up to mazrishalif in the north of afghanistan i bet its freezing but beautiful we will probably meet him somewhere again on the road thats the great thing about travelling in this q w the world you meet very nice people and if you are travelling in the same direction you will probably meet again continued next week hope good was b little disturbing as we have heard all kinds of horror stor ies such as only half the mail gets through in afghanistan etc anyway on to lahore and new delhi kandahar was muddy and dirty the bazaar was exactly as you could imagine flies everywhere camels and laden mules trotting around and hun dreds of afghanis milling ar- today we drove to istalif about 30 miles out of the city and known
