(photo submitted) Inter-County league playoffs underway BY ALEX TOUGH Special to the Gemini The Inter County League began play offs last Wednes- day and declared some of the games null and void follow- ing Thursday evening' s com- mittee meeting with two clubs and their problems. Firstly, second division's Buzzers had their league and play offs suspended for the remainder of the season. Theclub were found guilty of violent conduct by several players and of causing a game to be abandoned following a field "invasion" by players and supporters during a re- cent match. At the same time, the club has had an inordinate number of cards issued in latter games and has failed to show for hearings. They are gone. Secondly, First division's Merseyside were up before the committee to answer some allegations and suspi- cions concerning ineligible players. The upshot of a long evening resulted in the team losing all their league points by default. The team then intimated that they would not entertain matches in the playoffs and would not field a team for the remainder of the season. The club has a Hurricane Fran ruins Kinsmen girl's day of champions at Fall Fair The Kinsmen girls softball day of champions was de- layed on Saturday due to steady rains that rendered the fields unplayable. Td came back in the final inning with sevenruns to take Knechtel's in another close contest between the two very evenly matched teams. Mandy Storey hada key dou- ble for TD Bank and Amanda Nichol came in and pitched an excellent ender to close the door onagame Knechtel's squad. Knechtel's came close but couldn't overcome an injury to Katie Borg, one of their star players. She cracked a big double early and then broke her finger and had to leave the game. Laura Tummonds had a home run and played great defense at short, while Joey Stansfield played her best game of the year . In the end they were just short as the tying run died on third base. Quarter final action in the intermediate league saw Work That Body beat Dairy Queen in a 17-15 tilt. Work ThatBody came through with a big win in this see-saw af- fair that provided plenty of excitement for the fans. Casey Crichton hit a grand slam homer and Devon Maclean also spanked one and pitched three solid innings. Dairy Queen got solid ef- forts from Alene Malenfant, who had a long home run, Kathleen Dickson who homered and pitched well, and from Laura McGowan who was good defensively. Work That Body takes on first place Sammy's in the semi's next week. A semi-final game in the same league resulted with the . Optimists demolishing De- sign Builder 7-3. Optimists won this game with great pitching from Ashley Nichol and Amy Harper and with great defense from the entire team. For the Builders it was a tough loss, but not without some highlights. Dana Higgens had an RBI triple and Leanne Lyons and Meagan McGuire both dou- bled. The Builders just couldn't get the big hit, leav- ing the sacs full three times. The Optimists now face the semi-final survivors of the game mentioned above. Junior league quarter final play had Young's Pharmacy over M&M Pro Sports by a score of 20-3.
