Acton Legion entertains vets and widows Sunday BY FRANCES NIBLOCK With strains of "Lili Marlene" and "The White Cliffs of Dover" wafting through the air, veterans of both World Wars and widows of soldiers were entertained by Acton Legion members at the local branch on Sunday. A group of 40 veterans from the Metro Toronto Legion Village were bussed to Acton for a day of rest and relaxation. Each year the Acton Legion hosts a party for the veterans as a way of thanking them for their war efforts. Besides the entertainment, lunch was provided by the Legion Ladies' Auxiliary and one 98-year-old veteran, Alfred Glazier, recited war stories and proudly showed off his recent birthday letter from the Queen Mother. In September it will be the Acton Legion's turn to be wined and dined at the Metro Legion Village. Here in Eramosa Township, many beautiful historic buildings, homes, churches, mills, bridges and barns have been preserved for future generations to enjoy by our very own Local Architectural Conservancy Advisory Committee (L.A.C.A.C.) or "Community Heritage," as they will soon be called. The current 12 members o f the committee prefer to call themselves Heritage Eramosa, which is certainly a lot easier. The Heritage Act was started by the Ontario Government in 1974. Prior to that, nothing was in place to protect our heritage. Eramosa Township's deputy reeve at the time was Betty Lou Clarke, and after hearing about the Heritage Act, liked the idea and proceeded to assemble a committee. Knowledgeable people from all the hamlets and the farming community travelled about the township asking property owners if they would like their places designated and protected. If your house has something significant about it -- for example, maybe a famous person lives or lived there, or a person very important to the community lives or lived there, or you might have a Tuitman's winning streak comes to end BY ROSEMARY MUGGRIDGE Tuitman's Garden Centre and Landscaping Under-16 girls played away and met Brampton III on their home ground for their first encounter with this team this season. Many Acton players were missing due to holidays and it was a short-handed team that endeavoured to keep their winning streak alive. Tammy Allen played a great game between the posts substituting for Acton's missing goalie while Megan Kenzie found the back of the Brampton net for her first goal of the season. It was not enough to keepBrampton at bay and they came back with two goals to win the game 2-1. The team's next game is at M.Z. Bennett against Brampton I tonight (Tuesday). Town Milk ties Acton Ttavel In mini-squirt soccer action last Monday, Town Milk played to a scoreless 0-0 draw with Acton Travel. Playing an outstanding game in goal for Town Milk was Mathew Tunney while playing an aggressive game for the Town Milk Bulls were Laura Stephenson and Mathew Vanderleest. Al & Al's whip Erin 3-0 game was played by the Erin goaltender but Acton kept the pressure on and left the field with two points. Goals were scored for Acton by Greg DaCosta, Derrick Mclntyre and Paul Guy. Al & Al's Red Brand Meats blanked Erin 3-0 in Peewee minor soccer action on Wednesday in Acton. With a two week break behind them, Acton tookthe field againto meet up with Erin. An excellent very old house, or if the building is a good representation of a particular architectural style, or has an unusual feature--then it is a good idea to get it designated Heritage. Ann Chesworth, an Eden Mills resident, has been a memberof the committee on and off over the years, and on for the past three. Ann claims that we are very fortunate to have a L.A.C.A.C, and that not many townships have their own committee. Mrs. Chesworth recently completed and produced a wonderful booklet titled "The Historic Houses of Eden Mills -- A Guided Tour" in time for the 150th Anniversary of Eden Mills. Present Heritage Eramosa members are Ann Chesworth, Betty Lou Clarke, Don Delaporte, Teri DeWolf, Barry Dryden, Katherine Gordon, Wyn Jones, Beth Hindley, Jean Martin, Mary Rogers, Scott Jamieson and Coun. Rick Hughes. They attend numerous conferences, workshops and seminars and also present their own local seminars and slide shows. They also employ students in the summer.
