Acton Baptist Church marks 150 years with Sunday celebration BY FRANCES NIBLOCK The rain may have forced the cancellation of some scheduled events at Sunday's celebration at Acton's Baptist Church, but it didn't dampen any spirits. Hundreds of people helped the church celebrate its 150th anniversary with a day of worship, fun and food. The church was filled to the rafters Sunday morning for commemorative service featuring Pastor Tom Cullen's sermon "Aim low boring, aim high soaring." Pastor Cullen urged the church and members to strive for greatness and to stand up for what they believe, no matter the cost may be. Long-time church member Marjorie Landsborough shared stories of the mission circle. Alice Pilkington reminisced about the church choir and Ralph Landsborough remembered his days in the Sunday School and some of his favourite teachers. Following the service the fun began with a barbecue, a slide show and a show by the Acton Puppeteers, who received a standing ovation fortheir performance. Sunday's celebration was the third of four special services to mark this 150th year. The next service is slated for October and will include dedication of the church's new stained-glass window. Teams were evaluated in four categories, with judging based on overall and individual effort. In its first competition, the Georgetown team finished third. Gilchrist said complicated scoring sheets show that the Acton team members did not miss or score poorly in any of the events. "The team is really pretty amazing, but in competition you have to show off for the judges. If anything, the scores show that we didn't show off enough, not that we are not top-flight guards. In a real-life emergency we can't be beat." She said they will continue to practice competition skills in order to be ready for next year's event.
