Parent-Aid group offers Acton parents support Be the best of whatever you are! If you can't be a pine on the top of the hill, be a scrub in the valley; But be the best little scrub by the side of the rill. Be a bush if you can't be a tree! If you can't be a bush, be a bit of grass and some highway happier make. If you can 7 be a muskie, then just be a bass; But the liveliest bass in the lake! We can't all be captains; we've go to have crew. There's something for all of us here. There are big jobs to do and there's lesser to do And the task you must do is there near. If you can't be a highway, then just be a trail. If you can 7 be a sun, be a star. For it isn 7 by size that you win or you fail; Be the best of whatever you are! The subject of this poem -- motivation and self-esteem -- is one of many subjects covered at meetings of Parent-Aid, an Acton organization. Others include peer pressure, teens leaving home, substance abuse, sexual relationships and parents' legal responsibilities. Parent-Aid is a support group for parents who are having problems relating to their teenagers. The group's goals are to encourage parents and to help them understand their teens and improve communication. Also, to find ways to help and encourage teens in orderto improve their self-esteem. If you need some support and encouragement and feel like sharing your experiences with other concerned parents in the same boat who care, if you need some helpful advice or can offer any positive suggestions, plan to attend the group's next meeting at the Acton Curling Club on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 7:30 pm. If you are unable to attend, please take note that the following meeting is at Acton High School on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 7:30. Parent-Aid is open to parents o f teens from any school, so everyone is welcome! The group's motto: "Building a loving future together." Fire Dept, offers safety training Portable fire extinguishers are only as effective as the person using them. In a life or death situation it is the operator, not the extinguishers, that makes the difference. The Halton Hills Fire Department strongly advocates the need forall members of our community to have an understanding of the basic principles associated with extinguishers. In support of this philosophy, a training program has been developed and is available free of charge to all Acton residents. The program provides,an opportunity to the participants to use an extinguisher to combat small fires, in a contolled environment, under the guidance of trained professionals. The Fire Department is accepting applicants for their August programs. Reserve yourspotnow! Class size is restricted and sessions will be filled on a first call, first confirmed basis. For more information, contact the Fire Department at 877-1133. They will be glad to assist. JUST WATCH ME! At Town Council last Monday Bonnette described the directory as "terrific and excellent" and a great tool to encourage out-of-town developers to use local construction companies and services. Bonnette also suggested the brochure be handed out to all developers building in Town.
