THURSDAY, JANUARY 29, 1998 THE NEW TANNER 11 Acton's new arena and community centre. New arena's second debut for Acton's Bob Marshall Not many people in Acton can say they were at both the official Ts of the old arena in Prospect Park and the brand new Acton Arena and Community Centre. However, there's at least one. Bob Marshall of Tidey Avenue, Acton, remembers attending the first hockey game in 1929 as the OHA Acton Intermediate opened the season. This Sunday, Bob will also be attending the official opening of the brand new arena on Queen Street, East (Highway 7). Bob was only a boy at the first hockey game in the old arena to see a team play com- posed of Russ Salmon, Joe Kentner, Frank Gibbons, goalie Bill Holloway, Gord Huffman, W. Eccleshall, Pobby Anderson, Neil Gib- bons, Dr. Alan Buchanan, Joe Woodsand, Harry Chew and executive included John Mellon, president Gordon Beardmore,.manager Nels Garden, J.M. (Bud) McDonald and L.B. Storey. That team went on to win it's group but lost in the first round of playdowns to Paris. Acton OHA teams went on to win their group and advance to the playdowns nine times in 17 seasons all in the old arena. A curling club adjoined the arena. It was torn down when renova- tions and artifical ice were added in 1961 after a fund- raising effort that raised $90,000, quite a sum in those days. Renovations included a new entrance of cement blocks. Gradually cement blocks replaced the old tin walls. A new roof added in the 1970's. Although the official opening of the new arena is Sunday, the building, which took 272 days of construc- tion, has been in use since December 19, 1997 when the Halton Hills Skating Acad- emy took to the ice. Cost of the building which came in budget of $5.36 million, in- cluded land purchase, sery- icing the building and wid- ening Queen Street (High- way 7) in front of the build- ing. Not only is the new facil- ity an arena, it houses the Acton Seniors' Centre and a community hall with capac- ity of 220, as well as a lei- sure pad 104 feet by 32 feet. In comparison to the old ice palace with its ice surface of 175 feet by 75 feet, the new arena has rink dimensions of 190 feet by 90 feet. There are five dressing rooms and seating for 416 people with standing room for 150. The extra room, the new lighting and other facilities have delighted visitors to the facilities and elected positive and even envious comment from out-of-town visitors. The bright artificial lighting and well laid-out daylight lighting have given the building an extra dimension. Classified One Vermont castings reso- lute acclaim airtight stove. Phone 853-0366.
