In announcing the choice on Tuesday night, the selec- tion committee, consisting of former Citizens of the Year, said that the building com- mittee overcame almost in- surmountable odds to suc- cessfully complete the devel- opment of the non-profit housing development on Birchway Place. The build- ing committee consists of Gord McCutcheon, John Hoare, Edward Footitt, Mike Mattocks, Steve Goy and the late John Goy Sr. Award recipient John Hoare was surprised and somewhat embarrassed to learn that he was among those named for the Rotary honour. When asked about the in- surmountable odds men- tioned by the selection com- mittee Hoare said that a lot of people doubted that the project would ever be built. "Tt was a big deal for us to take on something of that magnitude on, money-wise," Hoare said, adding that the doubters were a driving force for the building committee to see the $5.2 million project happen. The 48-unit building, which was 10 years in the planning, has been occupied for almost a year and there is a long waiting list of people who would love to move in. Rotary Club spokesman Doug Fread said that the se- lection committee had a tough choice because of a substantial number of nomi- nations, including several Ask about our Toyota Grad with petitions of hundreds of names supporting specific nominations. "I think the award is a great honour to give to some- one or some group and I think that it also helps the morale of the Town to show that people are out volunteer- ing and helping their fellow citizens. I think that this year's recipients are a great example," Fread said in an interview on Tuesday night. The Legion Terrace build- ing committee will be hon- oured at an awards ceremony next month.
