10 Sports @e @ MSB Mustangs win junior volleyball title By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner The McKenzie-Smith Bennett Mustang boy's vol- leyball team cruised to an easy victory in the Junior Mustang Main Event volley- ball tournament held Tues- day at MSB. The Grade 6 boys dominated play in the annual 10-team tourney to take the championship game 15-8 over Burlington's Her- itage Glen. The girl's team made it to the semifinals on Wednesday before being bumped. The boys finished in sec- ond place in pool play with just one loss and then crushed Centennial 15-7 in the semifinal to advance to the championship. The Mus- tangs handily dispatched Burlington's Heritage Glen for the win. "The boys dominated right from the beginning in the championship game by playing really sound de- fence," explained coach Dave Walker in an interview on Thursday. "Reid Hendry had a cou- ple of big spikes for us and Jason Beatty played well, but it really was an all-round, great team effort. We were too much for Heritage Glen and they couldn't match us serve for serve. The team that made the fewest mistakes won," Walker said. The Mustang girls won their first set of two pool games, dropped two and then split one to end up second in pool play. They lost the semi- final game 15-9 to Stewarttown, which put them out of action. Stewarttown lost the championship to Oakville's River Oaks. The Mustang's Kylie Kruk, Sarah Barry and Hannah Goddard all deserve special mention for their great play in the tournament. Coach Walker said special thanks goes to the volunteers who made the tournament a success including parents, the high school students who refereed the games, the Grade 8 students who ran the snack bar and his fellow coaches. .
