THURSDAY, APRIL 23, 1998 THE NEW TANNER By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner ocal politicians have mixed reactions to this year's expected 6.97 per cent prop- erty tax increase that would add $154 to the average property for a total tax bill of $2,660. While Mayor Marilyn Serjeantson is both- ered that some taxpayers are upset, others like Ward 1 Councillor Norm Elliott feel no guilt. 5 "I don't we have anything to be ashamed of and cer- tainly we should be able to defend it (the increase)," Elliott said at council on Monday night as council passed both the operating Teacher Paul Tamblyn directs the Acton High School's production of the '50's musical "Grease" at a dress rehearsal this week at the school. Elliott pointed out that the Town' portion of the total tax bill had increased by less than 1.5 per cent in the past seven years and that the Town's increase accounts for just 0.83 per cent of the to- tal. Almost all of the increase is to pay for programs and services downloaded onto municipalities by the Prov- ince. Serjeantson said council was faced with a monumen- tal task of trying to make the budgets work. It will run through until Saturday.
