12 THE NEW TANNER Permit changes to prevent noise Town council hopes an enhanced special events per- mit will silence complaints about excessive noise at spe- cial events like the Acton Fall Fair and Leathertown Festi- val. A complaint about loud, live band music after mid- night at a Georgetown event last summer prompted a staff to recommend a policy change that would have re- stricted the use of amplified sound systenis from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Instead, local special event organizers suggested that the special event permit application be beefed up to address noise issues, a move supported by both the Acton and Georgetown BIAs (Busi- ness Improvement Areas) and approved by council on Monday night. "We've had a few noise complaints about the Acton Fall Fair and we are looking for anew location for the live bands at this summer's Leathertown Festival because we had complaints that the music was ricocheting off near-by buildings," BIA General manager Janis Fread explained last Wednesday. "We thought that what the Town was recommending Assic ALERT would have been far and be- yond the scope of some local event organizers and that making police aware that an event was taking place was a good compromise," she said. Event organizers will now have to inform both the Town and police if their proposed event has an element of noise and the final approval letter, including any noise-related conditions, will now be sent THURSDAY, MAY 14, 1998 The Acton Block Parent Program is currently being reor- ganized and people are needed to become Block Parents. Block Parents do not need to be home all the time -- they only need to display their sign when they are at home and able to assist someone who needs help. The Block Parent Program is a valuable asset to any community and helps to ensure the safety of all members (young and old) in the community. If you would like more information about Block Parents or would like to find out about becoming a volunteer, please call Yvonne at 853-1843. to the police. without disturbing others. Town staff hopes that the enhanced checklist, along with the Town's bylaws gov- eming noise and the use of public parks will ensure spe- cial events that benefit the community can take place ban C. By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner Wanted: A happy, loving home for Odie and Sheena, two cats abandoned several months ago at the Acton Vet- erinary Clinic. While clinic staff love the cats they know they would be better off ina permanent home. _ The healthy, well cared for 3-year-olds are brother and sister. They are orange and white domestic short hairs and Odie, the male, has extra toes and is a little timid. Sheena is the larger of the .two and is more out going. Clinic assistant Sheri Parisotto said both cats are good with kids. "Maybe a home with no other pets would be best. Both cats are pretty timid because of all of the other animals here. If we had to split them up I guess we wouldn't have any other choice, but they love to cud- dle and play with each other so it would be best if we could find one home," Parisotto said as she asked for The: New Tanner's help in find- ing the cats new owners. Two homeless cats pic- tured on the front page of the Feb. 12 edition of The New Tanner were adopted that day, one of them sight-un- seen. The clinic would accept a donation to pay for Odie and Sheena's care over the past few months. Both cats have had all of their shots and have been neutered. Traffic concerns Complaints from two Kingham Road residents about year-round traffic prob- lems and dangerous snow covered sidewalks in winter have been referred to Town staff for a report. Halton Condominium Corporation president Tom Rideout, who lives on Kingham, wrote one of the letters. "Unlike other streets very few of the town houses on Kingham front on the street FAMILIAR FACE: Statio so no one is responsible for clearing the snow," Rideout explained in an interview on Sunday. i "The area is unsafe in the winter because the sidewalks ° aren't ploughed and people are either forced to walk on the road or slip and slide on the sidewalk." The second letter com- plained about speeding traf fic on Kingham and the dan- ger it poses to young children and pedestrians. i n Hotel 22 year employee Colleen Tobin helps serve customers a cold refresh- ment at their anniversary celebration.
