The newly formed Cana- dian Blood Services will take over responsibility for col- lecting and handling all blood donations as of Sept. 1, and the roll of the Red Cross and local volunteers is not clear at this point. At Thursday's meeting Red Cross Toronto Blood Centre Clinic Co-ordinator Marianne Clarke praised the volunteers and donors for the dedication, but told them that she didn't have any real an- swers to their questions about how the new blood collection system would work. "Blood collections are down across the country and we have to work harder and harder in this time of transi- tion because we can't have one day of interruption with the blood program," Clark said, adding she will do eve- rything in her power to sup- port the volunteer component of Red Cross blood services. After the meeting Clarke said they are asking volun- teers and donors to just keep- ing doing what they have been. "We are encouraging peo- aig to share their good health y donating blood this sum- mer because for the blood program, it's business as usual," Clarke said, adding that the Halton Hills Red Cross Board would be briefed on the changes on June 19. Last year the Red Cross collected 329 units of blood at four Acton blood donor clinics with the help of 17 Acton volunteers. Some vol- unteers and donors were hon- oured at the meeting. Acton's Glen McKenzie was recognized for making 100 blood donations to the Toronto Red _ Cross. McKenzie, who gives blood every 56 days if he can, has actually made 144 donations in his lifetime, including while on holiday. Veteran Red Cross mem- ber, Acton's Fritz De Haan received a special branch cer- tificate of appreciation for his work with emergency serv- ices, transportation and blood services. De Haan be- gan volunteering with the Acton Red Cross in 1977 and has held the posts of presi- dent, treasurer and canvasser. Acton's Murray Harrison was honoured donating much of his time as a volun- teer driver, taking people to doctors and hospital appoint- ments. Harrison has been a canvasser and area captain in the annual door-to-door fund raising and served as Acton's emergency co-ordinator. Henry Kroes began volun- teering with the Red Cross 25 years ago and was instru- mental in starting an Acton branch in 1981. Kroes has chaired almost every Red Cross committee and was branch president. Acton's Julia Roehrig was honoured for her work as blood donor clinic chair since 1994. Besides the blood donor program local Red Cross services include 10 Acton volunteers who are on-call in case of an emergency, two Link to Health instructors provide fitness instruction and wellness training twice a week in Acton and the Acton Red Cross provides health care equipment loans, first aid instruction, water safety and international trac- ing and reunion services. The next Red Cross blood donor clinic, sponsored by The New Tanner, is Thurs- day. June 11, at the Acton Legion. Woman assaulted A 23-year-old Acton man has been charged with as- sault with a weapon, assault, threatening and breach of recognisance after his girl- friend was beaten at their Queen Street residence early Sunday morning. His name was not re- leased to protect the identity of the victim.
