Coaches and officials at the annual six-team all-On- tario final named the young Acton team most sportsmanlike. "Even though they might not have had the most suc- cessful win -loss record, at least they had an enjoyable experience and they deported themselves very well and rep- resented Acton ina very posi- tive manner," a proud coach Gord Swanson explained in an interview on Saturday. "Tt was a great experience for a young team to see what it's like to compete at that level." Phil McIntyre had a shut out as Acton battled Ottawa to a 0-0 draw in the first game of the tournament and Swanson said the win gave the squad some confidence heading into game two. "We met a very deter- mined team from Thunder Bay and lost 10-0 and that was a real wake up call for us when we realized that this was what some of the better teams were doing." Devon Fraser, assisted by Derrick McIntyre, scored Acton's lone goal in a 4-1 loss to host Glengarry High school in game three of the tournament. Goalie Phil Mcintyre played well, stop- ping two-penalty face-off shots. Turner boots three goals Girls Under-9 Grace Turner scored three goals to lead Royal Jug City to a 6-3 win over Halton Credit Union at McKenzie- Smith Bennett last Wednes- day. HERE WE COME: Kitchener Ranger's newest draft pick, David Lajeunesse (centre) is congratulated by his proud parents Mitch and Daniela. -- Angela Tyler photo Hockey dream comes true for Acton's David Lajeunesse By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner David Lajeunesse's hockey dream came true last weekend when the 16-year- old Acton teen was drafted by the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League. Lajeunesse was the first left winger drafted by the team and one of four Halton resi- dents called up to the OHL. "I've wanted this for my whole life. It's better than working," Lajeunesse said in an interview on Tuesday. "Although I still have to prove myself at training camp in September, I know that I'm physically and men- tally ready for the OHL." It was clear very early in Lajeunesse's hockey career that he had a lot of talent. He was points leader for most of the years that he spent in the Acton Sabres minor hockey system and repeated his high scoring ways with both the Halton Hurricanes, the Erin Junior C Shamrocks and for the past two years, the Jun- ior A Georgetown Raiders, rn eee ee oe ; Eh. 8 8 oe a Drug Mart Lro Monday - Friday 9 - 9 Saturday 9 - 6 « Sunday Closed 853-2220 294 Queen St. E., Acton where he also led scoring with 34 points in 39 games this past season. "Ever since I started play- ing hockey when I was four or five years old I knew that this was what I wanted to do as a job. Playing and practis- ing every day will be per- fect," Lajeunesse said, add- ing that he knew he'd get drafted, it was the where and when that kept he and his family on edge. "J knew that my skill level wasn't a problem, but I had no idea who might draft me and I'm glad that it's so close to home so my family can come to the games." Dad Mitch Lajeunesse describes David as a "hard- nosed player' who plays bet- ter when he's in the thick of things. "He can be nasty when he needs to be, but he's also a very disciplined player who doesn't retaliate and take penalties but waits until the time is right," Mitch Lajeunesse said in an inter- view on Tuesday. "David is a hard-nosed PROFESSIONAL GOLF CLUB REPAIR 1a * repairs to all makes * custom fitting ¢ new & used clubs for sale }jj Len Dodds kid who plays in traffic -- the rougher the game gets the better David plays so his strength is offence and toughness, which every coach loves," Lajeunesse senior said, already looking ahead to next year when he predicts Davis will be asked to try out for the NHL At 6 feet and 200 pounds Lajeunesse said that he was in decent shape, but needs to work on his sprints and run- ning and will spend the sum- mer getting in shape to be able to "make the jump speed-wise" from Junior A play. If he's signed by Kitchener after training camp Lajeunesse, currently a Grade 11 student at Bishop Reding High School would be billeted with a Kitchener family. He would attend high school during the day and spend almost all of the rest of his time playing hockey. Lajeunesse is represented by Cooper Sports Manage- ment that recruited him last year. 519-853-9988
