THURSDAY, JUNE. 11, 1998 THE NEW TANNER 3 Two Acton teachers get awards from Prime Minister By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner The innovative teaching skills of two Acton residents, Randy Cook and Maureen Flynn, have earned them the prestigious Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excel- lence. Cook and Flynn, who work for the Peel Board of Education, are among 17 teachers recognized this year by the PM for leading' the way in preparing their stu- dents for the new, knowl- edge-based economy. Three years ago Cook and Flynn, who describe them- selves as FACTS - facilitators, advisers, coaches and teachers, developed and implemented a new Interna- tional Business and Technol- Ogy program in Peel -- a unique program designed to create self-directed learners by encouraging students to use technology and launch entrepreneurial ventures. The program is so popu- lar that the Peel Board turns away as many students as it accepts - 120 each year - and some students willingly ride a bus four hours a day to get to the Mississauga school where the program is offered to Grade 7 and 8 students. Cook said that the heart of the program is based on an optimum target of devel- oping what is known as a "QISL". "That's a quality, inde- pendent, self- learner -- a student who takes con- trol of their own learning and has a clear picture of what they need, what it is they want and the skills and re- sources to go about achiev- ing that end," Cook ex- plained. gardain ¢ 4 Main St. N. i azaat The home of real bargains ' $10 off Ladies Bras assorted styles & sizes I i I I Reg. $12.99 | [ l i I I WUT UTS coupon of. Flynn, who moved to Acton recently, said the pro- gram has a dual draw for kids. "Initially, the kids come because of all of the really neat technology we have in our program. Our students are intrigued by trying some- thing different," Flynn ex- plained in an interview on Thursday. "They see a lot of comput- ers, a science lab filled with robotics and aerospace stuff and so the toys are their first attraction. They also like that we designed a program where they can make money and put it in their pocket," Flynn said, adding that one student developed a line of natural cosmetics and an- other marketed her artwork. Flynn said they listened to the business community when designing the program and aim to develop students who have a code of ethics, who are receptive to learning and to work in teams. Both Cook and Flynn, who each have over 30 years teaching experience, said re- ceiving their awards from the Prime Minister at a Parlia- ment Hill ceremony several weeks ago is the highlight of their careers.
