They know that making the Cana- dian Cancer Society fundraiser run smoothly is as satisfying as a good round. Each year the tournament raises approximately $25,000 for cancer research in the name of Paul Murr, a former Acton resident and businessman who died of cancer a decade ago. Organizer John Hoare started the tournament when his wife, a Cancer Society volunteer, said that they were looking for ways to raise money. "Being right into golf I said it would be no trouble to run tournament and big mouth me has been doing it ever since," Hoare laughed in an interview on Monday. "] asked Paul Murr, I was his mechanic and golfing buddy - to help me organize and run the first tournament in Guelph. Springs when it opened," Hoare said, adding that it takes about "30 meetings and 600 phone calls" for a very dedicated committee to pull it off each year. Hoare said that they won't have a final tally until all of the pledges and corporate donations are in hand. This year 115 corporate sponsors paid $150 each to have their company name displayed at the tournament. Individual golfers paid $135 for 18 rounds, dinner and tickets on the prize table. Galvcast employee Dave Luckett won the first prize of PROFES Len Dodds a set of gold clubs, donated by Plastics 80. Second prize, acedar chest donated by Lou Hilts of Rockwood, was won by a golfer from Toronto and Acton resident Tracey Fan- ning won third prize, a bar- becue donated by Acton Home Hardware. Canadian Cancer Society, Acton branch president Cathy Gerrow praised the tournament organizers as "very committed people."
