8 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, JULY 16, 1998 Ross, Marj Britton celebrate 40 years By ELLEN PIEHL The New Tanner Friends and family gath- ered at the Acton Royal Ca- nadian Legion last week' (July 10) to celebrate the 40th wedding anniversary of Ross and Marj Britton. Ross grew up in Acton and worked at the Canadian Meter Company in Milton. Marj grew up in Parkhill Ontario, north of London and moved to Acton in Septem- ber of 1957 to start a teach- ing career. She met her husband while boarding at the Britton Homestead. In less than a year, the couple were married near Marj's hometown on April 26, 1958. So what's the secret of keeping a marriage together for this long? "You have to compro- mise" Marj says. Marj said the highlight of the marriage was having four lovely children and then hay- ing grandchildren. Marj has some advice for newlywed couples. "Just hang in there." she says, "There will be lots of problems, but work them out because it's worth it in the end." The Brittons live in their farmhouse on Dublin Line, west of Acton. As a representative of the Acton Fall Fair this year, and having been involved in the fair all my life, I feel the need to ask the community to stand behind the fair board and offer their support for the arena. One way to do this is to fill out the ballot in last week's Tanner and send it in. Make your voice heard! Our fair is one of, if not the largest, event to occur in Acton every year, and the arena containing the homecraft displays, booths, and events such as the baby show and the Miss Acton pageant, is a vital part of this annual experience. If we were to lose the arena our fair would be seriously affected, and it is with sadness that I say the changes would prob- able not be for the better. So I ask the people of Acton and surrounding areas to support the restoration/ upkeep of the arena in what- ever way it is possible for you to do so. Whether you have a local business that can help in repairs, have the time to write a letter or place a call, or can support fundraising efforts like the 1914 poster sale, please make your sup- port known! See you at the fair! Jennifer Aitken Miss Acton Fall Fair 97.98 Road Safety Challenge a tremendous success: Dear Everyone, The Halton Hills Road Safety Challenge was a tremen- dous success. First in our Division and third in the Province --a great achievement! The week's events were fantastic. I know that it took a lot of hard work to sponsor and provide all the programs. Thanks again for your commitment.
