Acton Cancer Society raises over $28,000 in home canvass BY HARTLEY COLES The New Tanner Acton branch of the Ca- nadian Cancer Society raised well over $28,000 in their very successful residential campaign again this year, campaign chair Liz Bailey revealed this week. "It's an increase of over $1,000 for last year," she noted as can- vassers covered Acton and district homes. "We had the best weather (for the campaign) we've had in years," she said, starting with the Volunteer Apprecia- tion Dinner on April 1 when the highest attendance ever was recorded. "Tt was wonderful," she said. "Trinity Activity Group provided the chili, Sweet Dreams Café the buns, Mr. Muggs the doughnuts and Tim-Bri a door prize. There were lots of other prizes, too." And the campaign just picked up the momentum from the dinner. First Acton Pathfinders put the kits to- gether for the canvassers. Mrs. Bailey explained the town is divided into four zones with a captain in each while the rural areas are can- vassed by the three Women's Institutes -- Nassagaweya, Dublin and Bannockburn. Captaining the town zones were long time stalwarts Flo Fryer, Barb Robinson and Liz Bailey while new recruit Linda Richmond was the fourth. In the rural areas with the houses so far apart the canvassers did a "tremendous job," Mrs. Bailey said. Dub- lin W.I. was captained by Marj Britton, Nassagaweya by Sharon Anderson while Ruth Linham, who retired this year, was the Bannockburn captain. "Ruth has done an excellent job for the Cancer society over the years, raising thousands of dollars, and she deserves our thanks," Liz Bailey said. Needless to say they are look- ing for a replacement for Both Fairy Lake beaches safe for swimming Both beaches at Fairy Lake have been declared safe for swimming in the latest (July 23) report from Halton Region Health Dept. Last week the old beach on the south side of Prospect Park was deemed to have unacceptably high bacteria levels while the new beach by the boathouse was rated safe for swimming. This week's report shows both beaches are safe for swimming. Low water levels and the presence of waterfowl usually contribute to pollution on the lake. Visit our booth at the Leathertown Festival! Anyone interested can contact Liz Bailey at 853- 0585 or the Cancer Sogicty office in ; Acton Cancer Society not only has the successful resi- dential campaign but they receive funds from golf tour- naments and other activities such as the recent Auto-Tech smash-a-car event. "It's just another way Acton and area people think of this charity." Liz noted the Acton branch will also be sponsor- ing another antique show next year after the "very suc- cessful" one this spring. "Only next year it will not be on the long weekend," Liz says. "We brought something new to Acton and it has be- come a major fundraiser. We hope we've ironed out all the wrinkles and it will take off on its own." Funds for the Cancer So- TOR PL a (org Prt ed ats ras ACTON IGA DENTURE SPECIALIST EH. JUREVICIUS D.D.
