THURSDAY, AUGUST 6, 1998 ' THE NEW TANNER Police warn of counterfeit bills Halton Regional Police Fraud investigators have noted a significant increase in the number of counterfeit Canadian $100 bills in cir- culation in Halton Region and other areas. Police said counterfeit bills are showing up at vari- ous retail outlets. They are urging merchants dealing in cash transactions to make their staff aware of this prob- lem. They should take a mo- ment to check all their cur- rency with particular atten- tion to Canadian $100 bills. Police have several sug- gestions to reduce the risk to retailers and consumers, who should examine paper cur- rency that they receive dur- ing transactions. * Compare a suspect note with a genuine one. ¢ The hologram on the $100 bill fades from gold to green when viewed from dif- ferent angles. * Compare the quality of the paper, print and portrait on the notes. + A genuine bill will have a number of small green discs (planchettes) which can be picked off leaving a white round circle. These discs glow under ultraviolet (black) light. Simulated planchettes are usually printed on. Attempts to pick them off damage the paper of a bogus note, which may also have a waxy feel to it. * Check for raised print- ing on the genuine bill. The micro printing on the vari- ous parts of the bill should be crisp and clear. Counter- feit notes normally have flat print, blurred micro printing and a shine to them. * On genuine bank notes ° the portrait is lifelike with fine detail, including micro- scopic concentric circles within the eyes. On the coun- terfeit the portrait generally lacks detail. * Counterfeit bank notes BOYES PLUMBING Water Softener --~ Rentals was Water Pump m3} Service oer) GETTING SOME HELP: Mackenzie Lawlor asks for help on his art project from camp leader Shannon Still at the Junior Studio Art Camp in the boathouse at Prospect Park.
