QUESTION: When I apply the brakes for the first couple of times in the morning, they squeal. I've had the brakes checked and was told that they are fine and the noise is ANSWER: As a result of today's environmental concerns, increasing traffic and high tech- nology, vehicles demand high performance braking systems. To meet these challenges, automakers have developed organic, low and semi-metallic asbestos-free brake lining materi- als, which balances acceptable durability (lining life), performance and noise. Normal noises typically occur during the first few brake applications in the morning or while braking in re- verse. They may be heard at any time while braking and can be aggravated by conditions such as cold, heat, moisture, road dust, salt or mud. Some noises that do not indicate a need for service are: - A clicking noise during A.B.S. (anti-lock brake systems) stops. Noise from the hydraulic pump motor and valves heard while braking during emergency conditions is normal and indi- cates proper functioning of the vehicle's A.B.S. brakes. Remember to keep the pedal depressed during an A.B.S. stop for optimum performance. - Morning squeal is caused by humidity, low rotor and pad temperatures. Once the brakes are applied and the rotor and pad warm up, the noise will go away. j - A groan when creeping may occur if the vehicle is stopped and the driver slowly releases the brake pedal allowing the vehicle to creep forward. Noises that do indicate a need for service include a continuous grinding noise. This indi- cates worn out pads. A constant squeal noise (remember, some occasional brake squeal may be normal), shoe clack and moan are also abnormal noises which should be investigated. Having brakes checked regularly and performing a brake service once a year will help achieve best possible brake life and performance. This will also help keep repair costs to a minimum. --_ BRYAN & DAN > Send your automotive questions to Bryan & Dan c/o The New Tanner, 59 Willow St. N.
