THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, AUGUST 13, 1998 Acton parent wants skateboard ramp repaired for kids' use By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner An Acton parent's at- tempts to generate interest in repairing a homemade skate- board ramp for local youths seem to be paying off. The Town likes the plan; the ramp builder is enthused and initial overtures to the local Scouts were promising. Julia Rogers, whose six- year-old son Dane uses the ramp located at the Scout Hall on Old School Lane, wants to see it repaired for the skateboarders, roller- bladers and BMX riders who use it on a regular basis. While Roberts was impressed with the attitude of the kids using the ramp and their willingness to share the fa- cility and give pointers to her son, she's unhappy with the poor condition of the ramp, built about 10 years Skateboarder Dane Black, 6, of Acton. "We were appalled at the condition of the ramp -- their (the youths') major source of summer recreation here in Town," Roberts said, adding that it wouldn't take much money or wood to fix it. "Can we not, as a commu- nity, pool some resources and complete this project for Acton teens? Roberts asked, noting that the facility would go a long way to getting skateboarders off the street. Kempton, who said he no longer can afford to put money into regular upkeep of the ramp -- one side is unfin- ished and needs a plywood deck -- is pleased that Roberts wants to fix it up. "A friend of mine who lived near the Scout Hall and I made the ramp and allowed everybody to use it. It would be great if it could be repaired because it gets a lot of use," Kempton said on Sunday. Town recreation co- ordinator Stacey Green likes the plan to repair the ramp and meet the needs of Acton youths, in Town. "We're certainly inter- ested in working with Julia Roberts, other parents and the youth in Acton. We have been for the past year -- we've invited Acton youth on a number of occasions to get more involved with SIBHH (the Skateboarders, In-Line OCTOBER 19 DEPARTURES STILL AVAILABLE rom > 1749 7 Nights * Category 8 Sailing from Rome (Civitavecchia) to Elba & Livorno, Italy; Villefranche, France and Barcelona & Palma, Spain Prices shown are in Canadian dollars, based on double occupancy and reflect Early Booking Savings. The Town, 'in partnership with the SIBHH, is currently working on a plans to build a concrete and asphalt skate- boarding and in-line skating facility in Georgetown and Town staff said that they will arrange transportation for Acton kids to the George- town facility. Staff said that they looked at putting portable skate- boarding ramps in the Acton arena this summer but that ramps were in bad shape and needed to be rebuilt so they decided to offer field trips to other facilities while plans are finalized for the George- town facility, which could be built this fall.
