Ted Tyler Travel Service 379 Queen Street East Fax 853-1559 She bbe THE NEW TANNER Rural A day light raid on a ru- ral Milton property on Friday turned up a "substantial" Marijuana growing operating including 70 plants and loose marijuana valued at $43,000. Acting on a tip, uniform of- ficers from Milton found the plants, ranging between 1.5 and 5-feet tall, growing among other crops at the Fourth Line West, Milton farm. The crop was cut and along with some drug para- phernalia, was seized as evi- dence. Charged with produc- ing marijuana and possession for the purpose of trafficking are Robert Gordon Popp, 30, and Lee-Anne Hayes, 45, both of Fourth Line West Milton. They appear in court on September 14. Milton pot bust Theft from car Over the weekend a bur- gundy gym bag containing a CD player, CDs and sun- glasses -- total value $940 -- was stolen from a 1992 Geo Tracker belonging to a Church St. W. resident. The woman told police that she always locks doors but there was no sign of forced entry. False alarm A rural Acton homeowner will have his security system rechecked after firefighters responded to a false alarm at 7:34 p.m. last Friday. The owner of the home on Hwy. 7, between the Third and Fourth Lines, said the alarm system and smoke detectors had been serviced the previ- ous week. Can developers sit on approvals forever? Frustrated by the lack of both residential and commer- cial development in Acton . several local politicians sug- gest that Town should take a "use it or lose it" approach to planning approvals and water and sewer capacity. During recent council de- bate over reports required for the proposed Leathertown Junction plaza Acton Coun- cillor Norm Elliott said that developers can't sit on their approvals forever without putting' a shovel in the ground, while others are ready to build. The Town's manager of development review, Glenn Wellings, said staff wouldn't recommend stripping a de- veloper with pinnine ap- provals just because the land has sat idle, waiting for mar- ket conditions to improve. Cs: - STAMINA: Dancers from the Sokoly troupe take a breather between performances at Camp Weselka's recent concert. Like Highland dancers, these perform- ers found their national costumes weren't designed for the heat and rain they faced on August 9. -- Maggie Petrushevsky photo "If (development) isn't happening immediately does that mean we abandon our planning?" asked Wellings recently, adding that they can't make developers build.
