THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, AUGUST 27, 1998 Trustees debate school closure policy By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner Acton's public schools -- none of which are operating at capacity -- could face scru- tiny by Halton public school trustees if they approve a re- vised temporary school clos- ing/consolidation policy un- veiled by staff last week. The province has told school boards across Ontario that if they want money for new schools in growth areas, they must prove that they don't have any unused space. The Halton board has an es- timated 6,000 extra pupil spaces. That translates to about four high schools or 10 elementary schools. The board's last accom- modation study showed that McKenzie-Smith Bennett was operating at approxi- mately 70 per cent of capac- ity with 780 pupil spaces and approximately 500 students. Robert Little was at 75 per cent of capacity with 370 stu- dents and 490 student spaces. Acton High, which has a pro- jected enrolment of 560 stu- dents and capacity for 670. The board is currently wait- ing for revised capacity fig- ures from the province. Halton District School Board chair Ethel Gardiner said that, in total, schools in north Halton were operating at 92 per cent capacity in the board's last accommodation report, an acceptable level as far as she's concerned. Gardiner also noted however that "everything is wide open" and on the table when it comes to proposed school closures and consolidations. "Certainly our biggest dif- ficulty when it comes to ex- cess space is in Burlington and Oakville but we will be looking at all schools," Gardiner explained Saturday, adding the province's time frame to reduce capacity fig- ures is "incredibly tight." If the Halton board has a plan ready to get rid of empty school by the Dec. 31 dead- line it can't keep profits from the sale of the excess schools but the spaces will be re- moved from its inventory and that would help it get money to build new schools. After the deadline the board can keep the profits of school sales but the pupil spaces re- main in the inventory and the board won't get money for new schools. "We're over a barrel here and if we want to be fiscally responsible we need to ex- plore the options of closures or consolidations. It's a very difficult thing to look at again," Gardiner said, re- membering the public outcry when the board looked at closing surplus schools sev- eral years ago. Trustees will debate the proposed new policy next month. If approved, the policy includes two October public meetings for each pos- sible closure/consolidation. 264 Main St. N., Acton ; "We have everything you need 'i to do the job nght." *Hardwood Lumber + Plywood 4° Trim * Mill Work Mon-Fri 7-6 Sat 8-5 853-1970 @ CUSTOM HOMES @ RENO\ATIONS @ DRAIN CLEANING-INOUSTRIAL & RESIDENTIAL @ SERVICE & REPAIR WORK @ PuMP & PRESSURE SYSTEMS 20 years experience Master Plumber License Well Contractor and Technician License "Call's For Quality Wortmanship 8 Castner Satsarion" (519) 833-2660 1-800-603-2660 LO vam Grin erto cra Wel Taylor Abuutisune Ca Door Systems Replacement Patio Doors Vinyl & Aluminum Windows Siding / Soffit / Fascia [5 Inch Seamless Eavestrough (905) 877-6772 Georgetown SOLID OAK & CONSTRUCTION INC. Pat says he had some trees removed which allowed more sun to filter into his yard. -- Hartley Coles photo - COMMUNITY SUPPORT AND INFORMAT Women's Association meeting The next meeting of the Acton Women's Association Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Band hall, 85 Wallace St. Join us for a Weekender's Fashion Show and come out and see the new Fall and Winter clothing line!
