Literacy Day Sept. 8 September 8 is Interna- tional Literacy Day -- a day when the ability to read and write well is celebrated, and when citizens in communi- ties across Canada and in other countries will focus on the importance of literacy in their everyday lives. What can you do to pro- mote literacy in your home, work and family life? Help support community Literacy Programs. Volunteer as a tutor, make a donation or seek further information on how you might become involved in helping adults to improve their skills. Help other adults learn to read. Encourage others to improve their literacy skills. Plain language. If you or your organization produces written materials of any type, use plain language to express your points. Be aware of the impor- tance of reading and writing in your own life. Read as much as possible. Read to children. Early childhood experience at home with books and with reading is more important than almost any factor to a child's future success in read- ing and in school. CEES=O Vehicles ignore signs To the Editor: I am writing in regard to what I consider to be a very dangerous situation. The street I live on, Church Street, is made up of strictly residential. It is not a highway. But you would never know that by the way big tractor trailers go by all day long. To make things even worse, every day a huge tanker carrying molten sul- phur comes down our street. This terrifies me. At the cor- ner of Wilbur and Church Streets is an "all way" stop sign. Our apartment build- ing's main entrance is right there. I cannot count the ve- hicles that completely ignore this stop sign. God forbid if this molten sulphur carrier ever gets into an accident. There must be something done immediately to prevent such a catastrophe. There should be no large trucks allowed on this resi- dential street.
