AS Terry Fox Run Pledge Acton High School, How the Marathon of Hope Began In 1977, 18-year-old Terry Fox lost his leg to bone cancer. He was so affected by the suffering of other cancer patients that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. During his Mara- thon of Hope in 1980 Terry ran an average of 26 miles a day for 143 days until he was forced to stop due to a return of cancer. He died in June 1981.
