The soccer club he began 30 years ago has grown into a vibrant, well-equipped club with ap- proximately 480 players -- the majority under nine- years-old -- and a dedicated coaching staff of 48. The Acton Soccer Club celebrated three decades of operation with a video dance on Saturday at the Legion and on Sunday the champi- onship games for each of the older divisions were played at McKenzie-Smith Bennett. "The Club has been stead- ily growing over the past 10 years -- partially due to our very active fund raising which allowed us to buy bet- ter equipment and offer our coaches training sessions," said Club secretary Anne Stewart in an interview on Saturday. Stewart, first joined the Club 25 years ago as a par- ent of a player, said they were able to inject some life into the Club through the money raised at the Milton bingo. "We've been able to hold clinics for our young referees and we encourage the play- ers who are over 13 to join the referees association and they ref the younger kids and help keep them inter- ested," Stewart said. Looking back over the years Stewart said a major change occurred in 1978 when girls were allowed to Join the Club. Girls make up approximately one- third of the Club's mem- bers this year. "We fought for about two years to get the girls to play. It was the old boys' club and there was no room on the soccer field for fe- males until Richard CHASE THAT BALL!: Ac ae Par Kilpatrick, who had two sons playing and a daughter who wanted to, helped us con- vince the executive to allow the girls to join," Stewart re- called. Girls and boys play to- gether on the Under--7 devel- opmental teams and older girls play in the G.LR.L.S. -- for Girls In Rural League Soccer -- association against teams from surrounding communities including Brampton and Grand Valley. Stewart expects to match this season's success next year with generous sponsors, dedicated coaches and enthu- siastic parents and players. "The last game was a to- tal team effort -- everyone worked together for the win after we were down 5-0 in the third," Polo said in an inter- view on Sunday. The No Stars rallied for six runs in each of the next two innings took the final 16- 6 : Polo said all it took for the turnaround was "a little coax- ing and coaching." "L try not to hoot and hol- ler anymore --I'm too old for it," Polo said, noting that the over-35 No Stars ladies team has belonged to the Good Time league for 14 years. eae ee ' : Pn ae QUAD CHAMPS: The Rockwood No Stars of the Good Time Ladies' Fastball "The most amazing part is that we've won the cham- pionship four times in a row -- everyone is out to get us because no one else in the league has done it. Many have won it three times. But we're the first to win it four years in a row," Polo said.
