2 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1998 By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner Film companies wanting to shoot in Halton Hills on public property will have to pay a $500 daily permit pro- duction fee as part of a new film production policy ap- proved by council. With Halton Hills becom- ing a popular location for film productions council in- creased the daily fee by 500 per cent and updated interim film guidelines, designed to maximise public safety and minimize both community disruption and the Town's Film shoot policy exposure to liability. Ward 2 Councillor Kathy Gastle suggested that the $500 daily fee should be de- creased and that the Town should negotiate with pro- duction companies for im- provements and amenities. Georgetown councillor Jane Fogal argued that there are no benefits or spin-offs to the Town from production shoots and that they are "pretty much disruptive" and that the daily fee should be higher. Acton councillor Norm Elliott cautioned that it was too soon to be talking about Includes Air Fare from Toronto Dream Cruise Departures Site plan for Park- Lincoln approved ROME Departures 7 nts per person Best Available Inside Cabin Mon, Sept. 21 Mon, Sept. 28 Mon, Oct. 5 Mon, Oct. 19 $1,366 cons $1,466 cons $1,466 cons $1,466 cons BARCELONA Departures 7 nts per person Best Available Inside Cabin Fri, Sept. 21 PriecOct.a2 Triple/Quad $896, Single Supplement $840 $1,466 cons $1,466 cons Child Rate $896 The Air Canada Welcome Back Sale Toronto return from % PLUS $ PLUS i I 2 9 "43 OFre® Montacar Winnipec Ortawa Hatirax Tuunder Bay REecina Quesec City SASKATOON New York/Newarx St. joun's, Neuw, Prvssurce Moncton Pus apetrnin * Chicago CLevetann ATLANTA Boston St. Louis Provivence Minneapotts Wesearon Rateich-Buriam IM MINS oe $ pLUus New Onicans' PLUS 2998 *499 hae ug Vancouver FRankrurr Cricany Zoncu Eomonion Dussetoonr' Los Axcis Hampurc' SAN FRANCISCO/SAN Jose Moncu' Houston Stuttcarr' Kingston Bertin! "It (film shoots) is one of the largest, perhaps fastest largest, growing sources of income and revenue in To- ronto and it's spilling off in these areas...and what we're trying to do is be as recep- tive to this type of industry as possible. Perhaps the natu- ral beauty of Halton Hills will be utilized more and more," Elliott said. The application for a film shoot in Halton Hills in- approved by council cludes provisions for suffi- cient advance notice, crowd control, consideration of pe- destrians, traffic and emer- gency vehicles, proof of ad- equate insurance, notifica- tion of area residents, meas- ures to ensure public safety and payments to encourage cost recovery. Besides the daily fee the Town recovers the cost of handling film production re- quests by charging rental fees for parks, rooms, signs, equipment and by requiring building permits fees for stages and tents. .
