Vote to scrap ol Continued from Page 1 the danger exists it could collapse. Paul Stover, the Town's Manager of Facilities, esti- mated it would cost between $75,000 and $100,000 to se- cure the building to avoid public injury for the next six months if councillors decided against demolition. Georgetown Councillor Moya Johnson, who said she had sympathy for the group that wanted to save the build- ing, led off debate to demol- ish it. : "There is a risk and I know one of the speakers said the building hasn't fallen down yet and probably won't, and perhaps it won't, but we have an expert opinion that says it might and to me, that's enough..."Johnson said. Acton Councillor Clark Somerville said they owed Heritage Acton and the Ag- ricultural Society more time. "Things are not always in black and white and this is one that does fall in the grey area and I'm not surprised there is a groundswell (of support) out there because when you're around Town, you do hear it." Acton Councillor Rick Bonnette called the fair part of Acton's social fabric and the arena instrumental to its success. 7% ACTON. Mayor Marilyn Serjeantson, said she'd come to the meeting prepared to give the group six more months, but changed her mind and was no longer as "sympathetic." "Right now, I can't sup- port it because I feel it would be totally irresponsible on my part to support the six month extension with the idea of saying that we would have to find $50,000 to $100,000 to put (a fence) around the arena and to safeguard the residents," Serjeantson said. "We've got an issue that has polarized into liability versus what we feel is a moral responsibility," Elliott said as he asked that the demolition decision be de- ferred until May 1999 to give the group time to raise enough money to retrofit the structure. Elliott asked that $137,000 earmarked for demolition be frozen in the budget in case it's needed and that no more than $20,00 of that money be spent to secure the building. Only Acton's three councillorsvoted against the deferral and endorsed staffs recommended demolition. Council should ratify that decision on Monday. By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner Hide Market (Acton) Ltd. will celebrate the 100th an- niversary of the building that houses its flagship olde Hide House by opening a youth oriented leather clothing and gift store on the south west corner of Eastern Avenue and Church Street East. Olde Hide House presi- dent Steve Dawkins said the seven-figure project is the further evolution of the Leathertown concept. "Tt's something we feel is important to freshen up the concept, if you wish, of what awaits people who make the fabled drive to Acton," Dawkins said in an interview on Tuesday. The olde Hide House building was originally a Beardmore Tannery ware- house for finished products, waiting to be shipped all over the world. When a rail spur 'line was built in the late 1930's the building was sold to Mason Knit which ran an underwear factory there for 30 years. Frank Heller and Co. ac- quired the building in late 1960's and used it as the main plant until 1980 for manufacturing split leather products. At that point, Fred Dawkins, Ron Heller and Don Dawkins launched the olde Hide House. After opening two satel- lite stores -- FlightLine and West Warehouse -- the olde Hide House closed for two months in 1993 as it restruc- tured its finances. Although the Town's _planning department has asked for more details it is circulating the proposal to various agencies for com- ment. "J haven't seen a concept plan and all through the ap- plication it keeps saying 'spe- cifics to be determined in process' so I have asked them for a copy of the plan, some kind of a concept sketch," said Town planner Barb .
