12 Mi Constable enjoys Rockwood posting BY MAGGIE PETRUSHEVSKY The New Tanner Getting to be village constable for Rockwood is one of the best things in her career to date says Heather Nellis. A graduate of the Aylmer Police College and the University of Guelph, Nellis began working for the Ontario Provincial Po- lice in 1994, straight out of school. Her original posting was to Mount Forest. She transferred to the Guelph detachment last year and that was when she heard the village constable posi- tion existed. Before long her predecessor wanted out of the position and she vol- unteered to replace him. With her own family liv- ing on a rural property out- side the village and her hus- 2 days Mykonos 9 DAYS/7 NIGHTS FROM '1899 INCLUDING ROUNDTRIP AIRFARE 853-1553 4 days Greek Island Cruise 1 day Athens or Vouliogmeni INCLUDING ROUNDTRIP AIRFARE GLORIOUS GREECE... The position is aimed at building ties between the vil- lage and the force so people get used to continuity in service. "Policing is not a feel good job," she says, "but here you get known by residents, the kids wave at you, come across the street to say hello, etc. You like to feel you're doing a worthwhile job and this is as close to that recognition as you ever get." : Const. Dale Gear does school visits, but Nellis does other types of community ac- tivities, such as the upcoming Community Day at Rockmosa on June 24. Community groups and organizations such as churches, 4-H clubs, Junior Farmers, Child Find, Lions and emergency and fire serv- ices will have the opportunity to set up displays about their program. Nellis has high praise for the community. "People are beautiful. They're so friendly and caring." When there was a rash of spray painting last fall some- one even cleaned the graffiti off the sign at the new funeral home because they didn't want the owners to see it and be upset. "They're like that. There's community spirit here," Nellis says. "It's heart warming." ' Since there has been break-ins Nellis is reminding residents to lock vehicles and homes. "My pet peeve is the way some people leave their ga- rage doors sitting open. And where residents have their dogs tied up outside she points out the animal is no protection if its rope won't reach the house. No question is silly and no bit of information too trivial. "We want the community to feel the police are not far away. It's important they let us know about things," she says. Nellis works out of the detachment's Rockwood of- fice all the time although on rotating shifts. Other consta- bles cover the area on the other shifts but they don't work right in the office as Nellis does. Major Novice on a roll The Acton Major Novice Tanners have three wins and a loss in their 10-game OMHA playoff series.
