WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31, 1999 THE NEW TANNER 11 FLOWER GIRLS: Members of the Acton branch of the Canadian Cancer Society were busy last weekend selling daffodils. Sherry McNabb sold David Shan- nona bunch Saturday morning at IGA. - Angela Tyler photo Local survivors are generous with Cancer Local dealer wins Town truck tender Despite being high by $3,018.72, Park Lincoln- Mercury's bid to supply Halton Hills with pickup truck was accepted by Town Council over a lower bid from an out-of-town dealer. While none of the three bids submitted -- two of them from Park Lincoln and one from Hamilton Motor Prod- ucts -- met the Town's ten- der specifications, with some minor changes to a tow hitch and bumper finish, Park Lincoln's higher bid has fewer deficiencies than the Hamilton bid. Town staff had argued the integrity of the tender proc- ess would be jeopardized if the low bid weren't accepted. Staff described Dixon's shop locally suggestion was dis- criminatory. Dixon claimed facts used by staff to support the Ham- ilton bid were misleading, inaccurate and incomplete and said his "soap box com- ments" about the Town shop- ping locally had been takei out of context. "I did not state that local business should have prefer- ence -- I specifically stated that local business should have preference, where op- portunity exists," Dixon said, adding he was arguing for "principle, not profit." Both are cancer survivors who know first hand how important each and ever dol- lar is to cancer research and patient programs. Davies, of rural Acton, had already had breast can- cer surgery eight years ago when a canvasser came to her door asking for a contribu- tion. "We got talking about the wonderful things the local volunteers do in Acton and I was told about the transpor- tation program," Davies said. "Next thing I knew I had tides to all my appointments. Now I go every year for a check-up and the drivers are Just fantastic because they makea scary experience a lit- tle easier," Davies said. Marie Zions is living prooe that cancer can be ten. Twenty-one years ago she had rectal cancer and has Family Dining & Pizzeria ( Licenced under LLB.O. not had a reoccurrence. "Around this time of the year I think about the opera- tion and remember thinking that I wanted to see my chil- dren grow up and I wanted to see my grandchildren. I have," Zions said. Besides being a generous contributor Zion talks with people who have been diag- nosed with the same cancer she conquered. Approximately 180 can- vassers will be campaigning this month in Acton, hoping to top last year's door-to-door campaign total of $ 25,000. Canvassers are still needed for routes including Willow Street, McDonald Boulevard, Scene Street, sees Drive and south-west rural Acton. If you can volunteer to can- vass, call campaign chair Liz Bailey at 853-0585. In Ontario, over the past five years, 87 cents of every dollar contributed during the April door-to-door campaign was spent on research, pa- tient services and heath pro- motion. The remaining 13 cents was spent on adminis- tration and fundraising costs. BNR) @ 24 Hour Service Robinson Motors 546 Guelph St., Norval Dan C.
