Like local hockey and la- crosse organizations, the Acton Soccer Club is inviting players to try out for five new select teams that will compete in the North Peel- Halton league. Club presi- dent Gil Douglas said not every- one was in fa- vour of going to a select program because they were worried about the qual- ity of play in the house league if the more able players were pulled for the select teams. eon ad wh "Tt's taken a while to con- vince people of the benefits of a select program," Doug- las said in an interview on Sunday. "All of the house league players will now get a lot more time on the field and the bet- ter players get to play at a better level and they don't get frustrated and the kids in the house league get to see that ball a lot more so their learn- ing capacity is increased," Douglas said. The Acton Soccer Club, BALL BOYS: The play was fast and furious on Sat- urday at the Elizabeth Drive soccer pitch as the Acton Soccer Club held tryouts for its under-11 now in its 31st year, begins house league play May 8 with a fun day at the McKenzie- Smith Bennett fields. There are over 500 Acton and area youths; approximately two- thirds of them boys, regis- tered to play this year on 40 sponsored teams. Douglas said if the Club is to grow any more it needs an additional playing field -- lighted, if possible. "We've been having dis- cussions with the Town for a number of years. In fact, we offered the Town money, quite a sizeable sum of money ARIO AUCTIONEERS Professional Auction Services I might add, to give us a lit soccer field in Acton, and they are working on it," Doug- las said. Douglas said that they also do all that they can in the way of coaching seminars and newsletters to ensure their volunteer coaches have all the information they need. "Most of our coaches are former players or parents of players who donate a lot of time and effort to making sure the kids have fun and learn some skills. We couldn't carry on without them."
