To enlighten the unin- formed (like this reporter), Once Upon a Mattress is a' gentle, musical spoof on the kid's fairytale, The Princess and the Pea. While the sets were not elaborate, the per- formers kept their audience engrossed enough to over- look that part. It wasn't ex- actly a melodrama but it had some of those moments. Briefly, the story opens with yet another royal prin- cess failing the test of true royalty as designed by Queen Aggravain and her wizard. All the knights and ladies-in- waiting bemoan the queen's ban on marriages until the heir, Prince Dauntless, finds awife. One of these ladies, Larken, is desperate because she's pregnant and her lover, Sir Harry, promises to save the situation by bringing back a Teal princess from the swamps for Dauntless. Given that Aggravain is determined to keep her son single, King Sextimus (silent because of a curse but getting his message across well in pantomime) loves to chase serving girls, and Princess Winnifred is a no demure maiden, the whole premise is full of fun with just enough foibles to the stars' Tadiiee Hometown news that people read! characters to have some truly human moments. Director Lucy McGhee obviously had fun with her cast and encouraged the out- Tageous antics of the 'deli- cate' Princess Winnifred (You can call me Fred) with a deft touch. Sung by Jenn Schultz, Winnifred managed a bawdy demeanor in her introductory number, Shy, and a sentimen- tal note with The Swamps of Home and Happily Ever Af- ter. She's no slouch in the act- ing department either as proved by her first class ren- dition of a drunk and her at- tack on the mattresses when she can't get comfortable. The hit of the show how- ever, has to be Rebecca Aus- tin as Queen Aggravain. Sar- castic, vain, tricky, bossy, she doesn't even have to wait to become a mother-in-law. She's got the whole nasty stereotype mastered already. Daryn McIntyre as Sir Harry, Jennifer Johnson as the Minstrel and Meighan MclIntrye as the Jester de- serve mention for the clear, _ true voices with which they displayed both their vocal and emotional ranges. This will also be a final year for two supporting staff mem- bers, the program said. David Sale, the show's musical di- rector, retires after 15 years with AHS musicals while Doc Paul Tamblyn, AHS musical director for 15 years, retired last year but returned for a cameo as the Jester's late fa- ther, Sliding Peter Jingle in this year's production.
