Band concerts There's nothing quite like a band concert in the park but one at the Legion hall beside the sparkling waters of Fairy Lake should be even more delightful. Bandmaster George Elliott announced this week that Acton Citizens' Band would be play- ing two band concerts on the legion patio. The first one is next Wednes- day, Aug. 18 and there's another on Wednesday, Aug. 25. The band will be in full uniform at these twilight outdoor concerts, starting at 8 p.m. They'll last for an hour and a half and, of course, out- doors depending on the weather. The concerts are being presented in co- operation with the Acton branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Bell survey - Bell Canada is asking their cus- tomers in Acton if they'd like to in- clude Toronto in theif free calling area, in a survey mailed this week. Acton's free calling area now in- cludes Guelph, Georgetown, Milton and Rockwood. The addition of To- ronto would add another $5.60 per month to the cost of one line. The party line cost would add another $4.70. If there's enough support for the idea, Bell will likely implement the program. New culvert Work has started on a new cul- vert on Main Street North for the School Creek which passes under Highway 7 beside the Acton library. Workmen have been busy this week digging and installing pipes ready for highway improvements. Meanwhile, work on repaving and repairs on Highway 7 from Acton's eastern boundary to Silvercreek is slated to start this month includes pulverizing the ex- isting pavement, laying new asphalt, restoring highway shoulders and re- building driveways as well as a new. guide rail system. Queen and Young Streets will also be repaved. e nee ae on -- I piteeeee ne ~~ jaez: i sens ; eee Chiropractor cures 2-year-old To the editor, q I would like to thank local chiropractor, Dr. T. Thompson, for helping our family have a healthy, energetic and happy two-year-old. Kip, our two- year-old loves going to the chiropractor so much that he practises on everyone he sees and he says he would like to be a chiropractor. Kip has not been very well since two weeks after birth. After seeing several specialists, going very of ten to the doctor, trying a naturopath and filling 30 prescriptions, I was quite desperate fess Kip was ill about 24 days in a month and he seemed to be going deaf. It was so strenuous being a full-time working mother of three with a boy who was up about six times a night in pain and some- times he screamed all night in pain from serious ear infections. It was a stranger, to whom I am extremely grateful, to recommended a chiropractor. Kip has been better since his first visit to Dr. Thompson. Kip feels more comfortable with him than with any of his relatives. It has been two months now that we have a healthy boy who doesn't require any medication. It appears he expe- rienced trauma in the neck at birth and this explains so many things that have occurred. In a small town, where some of my favourite businesses close, where many downtown buildings stand va- cant, I feel proud that an alternative health service helped Kip remark- ably. Thank you Dr. Thomspon. Heidy Peragine Acton is a town to be To the Editor, This letter is written to express my feeling about our town, Acton. Firstly it is a town one can be proud to live in. We have many great support systems for young and old alike. For instance we have the many volunteers who are always there when needed. | am referring to our Fire and Paramedic departments with whom we could not do with- out. Then there are the wonderful Red Cross_and proud of Society drivers. These people are all volunteers, giving of their time, so that people without means of trans- portation can get to their doctor ap- pointments, shopping and other ne- cessities. I firmly believe that Acton is go- ing to once again be a town with lots of new businesses. Recently I discovered that the Videoplex store on Mill Street got rid of all the "Adult Flicks" in their store. ; Canadian Cancer _----- This: was-done'by the néw. own... or at || THIS IS AN OCTET? Octets have eight members according to the dictionary but all we could find was seven when we found this group at the Leathertown Festival Sunday. - OuT TO LUNCH To: All Female Body Builders: As usual, I spent the better part of Saturday glued to the television watching mud wrestling, drag rac- ing, dwarf tossing, lawn bowling, boccie-ball, roller derby and grog jumping. As I was about to turn the set off, (in order to give my eyes a much needed rest), | saw a preview for what was-to follow - competition of Female Body Builders. Being the curious type, I de- cided to stay turned and see what the sport was all about. The an- nouncer promised that I would see some of the most perfect female forms in the world. He didn't have to say another word to win me over! I raced to the kitchen to get more goodies and got back to my seat just as the first contestant was walking onto the stage. The most perfect female forms in the world? OOOHHH HOW GROSS! I know everybody has been described as not being the best in this world, but you women really out to get some help. All those rigid and oily bodies, tens- ing and straining to accentuate their deformities were really lost on me. I have absolutely nothing against anyone staying in shape, but the shapes I saw in your com- petition could hardly be called normal. To me, this shows that they care about our children because they also put in a selection of many movies just for the kids. It makes it a pleasure for moth- ers to be able to come into this video store and not worry about their kids being exposed to these "Adult Flicks". Janet and Robin, as a grand- mother and mother I thank you, as I'm sure the other moms in Acton do. Keep up the good work ladies, you are a real "class act." I may not know a lot, but | DO know I appreciate women who are in good ae mentally and physi- cally; women with nice, soft curves and rounded features. Somehow, | just don't think I will ever get used to ripply stomachs, backs, arms and legs. It would be too much like dat- ing Arnold Shwartzennegger. MMMMM This is to All Toupee Manufac- turers: Let all the used car and aluminum siding salesmen step. aside! The King of marketing is about to take his rightful place amongst the sellers of the world. Who, you ask, has inher- ited this throne? None other than the people who sell toupees. (Are you thinking I have finally flipped my lid? Well, bear with me fe a few short moments.) Last night I was watching another of those Hollywood award extrava- ganzas - you know, the ones that fea- ture all the stars. (Who's got time to do a movie any more?) There was the usual parade of personalities into the theatre, spotlights, interviews and jockeying for position. There was also the awards themselves - | believe this one was for anyone who had exceeded their 15 minutes of fame; (there were only three recipi- ents). The stand-out of the evening for U.S. links have Dear Ms. Petrushevsky, We are writing to comment on your interpretation of history, Half Century of Fun, The New Tanner, pg. 7, Thursday, July 29, 1999. You write that "the Canadian members sepa- rated from their American partners 50 years ago to establish their own organization." This simply is not true. In 1949, five organizations founded the annual gathering that you attended: The league of Ukrain- ian Canadians (Canadian-based), The Organization for the Defence of Four Freedoms of Ukraine (Ameri- can-based), The Ukrainian Youth Association (Canadian and Ameri- Sincerely, can-based),. The. Association of Vet-~ me was how most of the aging male members of the audience were sporting the most awful looking toupees the world has ever seen. What really amazes me is the fact that the most fa- mous stars, the ones you would think have the most money, al- ways don the worst looking rugs. (That name is not really fair to the carpet industry - there are good looking rugs!) Do you have some kind of odd scale that says the more you pay, the worse it must look? How are you able to get these gentlemen to buy them? It is no doubt the best kept secret in the world. I am certainly no expert, but you don't have to be an expert to see the colour doesn't match or that the texture is different from what little hair they have sticking out in all directions from underneath the thing. Whatever you have on these guys must be powerful indeed. | mean if they aren't looking at themselves in the mirror, surely their agents and publicists must glance at them occasionally. How do you keep so many peo- ple under your spell? Whatever it is - please, please don't let the life insurance salesmen in on it. The world isn't ready for that yet. Over the past 50 years, between two and five of the above-mention organizations have been represented in the Organiz- ing Committee of each gathering. In fact, 'American-based organiza- tions have been members of the vast majority of Organizing Com- mittees. We would greatly appre- ciate it if you would correct your error in the next issue of The New Tanner. Sincerely, Orest Steciw
