It's a trip I'd rather not take, The story of the sea is a profoundly sad one because it is a prime example of how destructive human short- sightedness can be. In this case it has destroyed an im- portant waterway, fishery and ecosystem. The Aral Sea used to be one of the world's greatest inland bodies of water cover- ing some 40,000 square kilo- metres. Since 1960, however, it has lost 80 per cent of its volume, and scientists say that within 10 years the once great lake will break up into three small, separate bodies. The Aral's demise began in the 1950s when Soviet plan- ners carved hundreds of kilo- metres of irrigation canals to -- by David Suzuki . -- divert water from the rivers flowing into the sea. Farmers were allowed virtually unlim- ited access to water and ferti- lizers, and crops flourished. But by the early 1960s, bil- lions of litres of water had been siphoned away and the lake was shrinking. Today, 3.6 million hectares of a once vast body of water are dry - an area twice the'size of Lake Ontario. What re- mains has been poisoned with agricultural runoff, kill- ing most of the fish and driv- ing the lake's 24 native fish species to extinction. The loss of the moderating effect of the water has also changed the region's climate, making the summers hotter and drier and winters colder. The human cost is im- mense. We will film what was formerly a waterfront house that is now over 100 km from shore! As many as 100,000 people have been displaced, and to make matters worse, all the fertilizers and pesticides that flowed into the sea for dec- ades are being uncovered as the sea bed is exposed. The new, dry climate turns the sea bed to dust, and the wind whips up toxic dust storms that make death rates from respiratory illness here among the world's highest. The story of the Aral Sea is a parable for all societies that put short term economic agendas ahead of longer term reflection. Canada is blessed with 20 percent of the world's fresh water. Yet many Cana- dians buy bottled water that costs more than gasoline be- cause they don't trust the quality of tapwater. Neverthe- less, there have been propos- als to start bulk-exporting our water. A moratorium has been put in place preventing this, but until water exports are prohibited by law the threat 7) TYLER TRAVEL SERVICE wn. Unfortunately, it is one denied to millions the world over. Already one in three Asians does not have access to clean water, and according to the September 15 report from the United Nations En- vironment Programme, at cur- rent levels of consumption two out of every three per- sons on Earth will live in wa- ter-stressed conditions by 20025. Changing our patterns of consumption, using en- ergy more efficiently, protect- ing our water resources and distributing them more equi- tably are essential if we are to prevent other regions from suffering the fate of the Aral. Visiting this region and seeing first hand how human folly has destroyed an eco- system, a way of life for hun- dreds of thousands of peo- ple, and the health of thou- sands more will not make a happy story, but it will un- doubtedly firm my resolve to help us work towards a future where this won't happen again.
