Cont. from Pg.1 Halton. "Form follows function. You have a group home set up and you get the social serv- ices and infrastructure in place and you get more group homes," Somerville said, add- ing it's a very sensitive issue. Sensitive as it may be, it's an issue that concerns the board of directors of the Acton BIA (Business Im- provement Area). When briefed on the ad hock group home committee by Somerville (Council's rep, on the Acton BIA) the board of directors said Acton has reached a saturation point for group homes and is con- cerned about the "influx of more social agencies into our downtown core." BIA board chair, Brenda Watson said some downtown merchants have expressed concerns with more social agencies locating in the core and the community is also questioning why Acton has so many group homes. "We'd like to be consid- ered a kind and caring com- munity for sure -- but do you want to become the kind of caring community, that that's all you see when you drive through is people who need to be cared for?" You don't want to offend anybody, but at the same time you have to kind of look out for the other people that live in the com- munity," Watson said. When you were able to buy a cone of french fries for a quarter at Watson's Restaurant and you-could go see a movie matinee right in our downtown! : Help us turn the clock back, to discover what it was like to live here in 1960. The Acton High School Reunion Committee has a whole weekend (June 24&25) packed full of events, to welcome students who attended the school between 1954 and 1977 and the Acton BIA has jumped on the bandwagon too! We've picked the year 1960 to commemorate, so the downtown will be trans- ported back 40 years for our Pedestrian Market on June 24th. Right after the parade at noon, three blocks in downtown Acton will remain closed to traffic for sidewalk sales, displays, entertainment and a walk down memory lane. Do you have any photos from 1960 that the BIA could borrow, information about what you could buy downtown and how much it cost in 1960, special hang outs that were a favourite with teens and stories of the 60's will help us turn back the clock for this one day! Drop off your stories, photos (which will be returned) and reminisces in the BIA post box next to the Bank of Nova Scotia, drop them off at the BIA office, 170 York St. Acton, or mail them to the Acton BIA. We're going back to the future!
