THURSDAY. FEBRUARY 24, 2000 <@ Cancer Society Campaign Dear Editor, ' The a Branch of the ~ancer iety is busy get- ting ready for the first residen- tial campaign and daffodil drive of this century. 1999 was a tremendous success for us as we reached anew landmark - over $30,000 was donated by the very gen- erous residents of Acton and the surrounding area. Of course this feat could not have been achieved without the dedication and tireless efforts of the many volunteers who gave a few hours of their precious time for such a wor- thy cause. There are many jobs to be done. The first Acton Path- finders put together approxi- mately 150 kits. The zone cap- tains get these kits to the cap- tains. They deliver them to the canvassers who then com- plete the job by knocking on your door. Thank you to all Scout/Guide Week celebrated Feb.29 BYMAGGIE PETRUSEHVSKY The New Tanner Although Thinking Day was Tuesday (Feb. 22) Acton Scouts and Guides won' t hold their main celebration of Scout-Guide Week until next Tuesday, Feb. 29. That's when the Boy Scouts will host a rally at the Scout Hall for all the boys and irls involved in the town's cout-Guide movement, says George Henderson, vice- president of North Halton District Scouting. "We used to hold. church parade," he says. After your generous donation has been collected and your receipt has been is- sued the job of counting and depositing the money begins. All the paperwork necessary for our records and the gov- ernment must be completed, too. We are always looking for volunteers to help out. We need canvassers in all areas of town, the rural areas and in our new housing develop- ment. Do you have a few hours to devote to a very worthy cause? If you do, please con- tact Cathy Gerrow at 853-1424 or myself at 853-0585. We will be happy to add your name to the team of incredible peo- ple who keep making each year better than the last. Ui Bae, Campaign Ch _ Acton Branch, Cancer So- ciety of years ago we found we could get more participation with a small get together at the Scout Hall. We sing songs, put on the fire and share thoughts about the movement. It's informal and seems to suit our people." Linda Ellis, District Guide Co-commissioner for Acton, agrees with Henderson that about 200 youngsters are in- volved with the movement in Acton. While the girls have their choice of Sparks, Brown- ies, Guides Pathfinders or Junior Leaders, depending on their age, there are no Ranger or Cadet groups operating here. Henderson says all the groups for boys are now open to girls, too although the girls groups do not accept boys. Acton has Beaver, Cub, and Venturer groups but no Scouts this year. a re ats GETTING IT RIGHT: Craig Foster, left and Dave . While there are always a few new faces each year, most of their leaders have been around for a while. Personally, he has been in scouting for 25 years and is a former himself. Traditionally the youngest age groups are the fullest, Henderson says, adding they would like to set up a second Beaver colony if they could get more leaders. Ellis says they, too, need more leaders, especially for their Sparks Pe Scout-Gui it-Guide Week centres around Thinking Day, Feb. 22, the birth dates of movement founders Lord and Lady Baden-Powell.
