THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, MARCH 2, 2000 Increase Horsepower, Improve Fuel Economy With Synthetic Motor Oils Spring's arrival brings warmer weather, spring-clean- ing and, for motorists, it brings the annual spring oil change. Of the many motor oils on the market, many peo- ple prefer synthetic motor oils for the superior year-round protection and engine per- formance they deliver. Synthetic motor oils offer many advantages over con- ventional motor oils. Even though synthetics have been around for nearly three dec- ades, consumers are only just now becoming aware of these high-tech lubricants. The relationship between friction and engine horse- power is easy to perceive. Reduce friction, and an en- gine's pistons, gears and power train will operate more efficiently, producing more power. The greater the fric- tion, the greater the dissipa- tion of power. In order to pro- duce an equal amount of power with petroleum, one must expend a greater amount of energy (fuel ignition). Today, nearly every major oil company has a synthetic motor oil as part of its prod- uct offering. In addition to increased horsepower, synthetic oils enable motorists to save money due to other benefits. Does Your Car Wax Reduce Shine? The wrong wax can be dis- astrous to your new car's gleaming shine. Many com- monly-used wax products can actually dull your new car's mirror finish. They use a com- bination of wax or silicone and a harsh abrasive polish which causes tiny scratches. The scratched paint can't reflect light as well as new paint. This results in an over- all reduction in shine. Your new car should not be exposed to these abrasives. It just needs wash- ing and a follow-up with a good abrasive-free wax. Early car wax products were abrasive-free. If an abra- sive polish was needed, it was sold as a separate product and by the strength of the abrasive used, from strong to extremely mild. The best waxes were made with imported Carnauba wax. Carnauba grows on a select group of palm trees that grow mainly in Brazil. As the costs of gathering ind importing this natural wax skyrocketed, chemists cre- ated cheaper "wax-less" sub- stitutes. Abrasives were then added to these new products. They were billed as the lazy man's one-step car polish. Unfortunately, they've never been able to equal the extreme high gloss and lasting power of pure Carnauba wax. Since the change from Carnauba to man-made synthetics progressed over many years, only the astute consumer realized he was get- ting less shine for his money. Today it is difficult indeed to find an abrasive-free car wax containing the best grades of Carnauba. Good Carnauba wax prod- ucts contain no cleaners, pol- ishes, abrasives or anything that can scratch paint. sess en A 1/4 pint of the liquid Carnauba will cover more cars than a full pint of most store- bought waxes. Here are four ways people could save money using syn- thetic lubricants: * Save money on lube by changing at less frequent in- tervals. * Save money in reduced fuel usage (increased fuel ef- ficiency). * Save money on reduced downtime. * Save money on longer- lasting seals. Numerous tests have dem- onstrated the increased fuel efficiency of synthetic lubri- cants. Because they are more re- sistant to viscosity break- down, synthetic motor oils last longer. Their thermal sta- bility offers better protection against deposit formation and sludge. Their oxidation resist- ance and resistance to burn- off results in lower oil con- sumption. In short, the benefits of synthetics are extensive. For this reason, many believe that synthetic motor oils will be the lubricant of choice in the new millennium. CAR 2IAR ,. The fa- miliar open hood complete with streaming smoke is a common picture on highways across the country. In fact, next to flat tires and empty gas tanks, overheating is one of the leading causes of break- downs. Once your car has overheated, there is little you can do to get the engine started again before the car cools down - and that can be avery long time. The best way to handle an overheated ve- hicle is to take precautions before you begin a road trip. The following advice will help you avoid breakdowns due to overheating. You are aware of what the heat and sun can do to your body if you are not properly hydrated - you can suffer from heat exhaustion. The same idea applies to your vehicle. Common causes of overheat- ing are a lack of coolant, be- cause of a hose leak, or a re- striction of the coolant flow, due to a closed thermostat, plugged radiator, or a broken or slipping drive belt that is not turning the water pump. During dry summer months, you should check your cool- ant level once a month. Other times of the year, it is sug- gested that you perform a twice-a-year inspection of the cooling system to avoid a roadside emergency. Spring is here, and it's time to repair winter's wear and tear on your vehicle. Our special GET TUNED FOR SPRING section is loaded with helpful infor- mation and articles to put you on the right road to the best service, parts and accessories for your ve- hicle. Get in tune, and be safe for spring and sum- mer driving fun.
