By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner No news is good news for the Acton and Georgetown agricultural societies when it comes to suggested tax changes for an Ontario herit- age tradition -- the fall fair. While Queen's Park talk of eliminating a commercial tax exemption on land owned by tural agricultural societies could cost some large fairs more than $75,000, Halton Hills treasurer Ed DeSousa said the Town owns the fair- ground land in both commu- nities. "The assessment office is still trying to get hold of the Ministry of Revenue to get an answer... but, I don't see a local impact." DeSousa said, adding both Fair boards have perpetual agreements to use the fair grounds. The Ministry of Agricul- ture, Food and Rural Affairs is reviewing the Agricultural and Horticultural Societies Act, amid rumours that grants to each of 235 agricultural societies and 275 horticultural societies will be more than halved to $500,000. The Acton Agricutlural Society received $3,000 in provincial grants last year, while the provincial average was $4,034, a difference Acton Agricultural Society treasurer Daniel Varanelli said may be explained by higher grants for capital projects to those agricultural societies that do own their fairground properties. "We would then either have to incorporate the PST into our fair admission price, meaning we would make that much less on it, or up the price," Varanelli said, adding the exemption saved the fair $4,000 last year. Town may buy MSB land... Continued from page 1 erty) would that be the end of the world? Is that a solution... what if a seniors home was built on the property -- would everybody be upset?" Serjeantson asked. At last Wednesday's meet- ing Halton school board trus- tees deferred debate on the strategic plan, that includes the proposed sale of surplus land-- until the April 19 meet- ing.
