Bromley, president of the Canadian Jiu-Jitsu Associa- tion, is fielding calls from po- tential competitors from Nova Scotia, British Columbia and the United States. It will be an open competition so other martial arts will be in classes from beginners to experts and the physically challenged. Bromley predicts people will be "blown away" by the talent. "T have a little four-year- old white belt and you won't believe what he can do. One of my colleagues is a 10th degree black belt and there's bound to be some pretty amazing stuff," Bromley said. Bromley, a third degree black belt who also teaches self defence classes in area schools, said the challenged will do everything but kick. "Wait until you see Drew compete. He's blind, paraple- gic and with only one func- tioning arm. He is unbeliev- able. Absolutely incredible and he's a blue belt in Jiu- Jitsu and spends all his free time practising -- that's his reason detre." Jiu-Jitsu, literally trans- lated "Gentle or Flexible Art," is one of many hand- to-hand martial arts. The prac- tice of Jiu-Jitsu has been traced back at least 2000 years and some techniques were used for training war- riors. While Bromley said she has no respect for a recent "ultimate fighting challenge," she noted the Jiu-Jitsu com- petitor dominated all other martial arts practitioners. "It's basically because we fight on the ground and many other martial artists aren't trained to defend on the ground -- punch, kick, take to the ground, lockup, control -- basically is what we do," Bromley said, adding that's not what Jiu-Jitsu is all about. "It's about a deep rooted philosophy of mutual respect. I'm always telling my kids it's Ray Atkinson -563; High single women -Anna Eikerman - 228: High triple women - Anna Marie Lowin - 618.
