THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2003 THE NEW TANNER 17 PeeWee A Tanners Rebound in 3-3 Tie BY WARREN EDWARDS The Acton Tanners Heartland Supply & Services Peewee 'A' team rebounded from two _ lacklustre performances earlier in the week with a fine effort on Sunday afternoon trying second place Guelph 3-3. The Tanners believed they had won the game with a late goal by Jessy Kuenzig, but a questionable refereeing decision of goalie interference on Bradley Kri overshadowed what was an otherwise outstanding effort. From the opening face-off, it was apparent that both teams were committed to free- flowing, end-to-end action, much to the delight of the fans in the Acton arena. While the Kuenzig line featuring Brandon' McCarthy and Kri dominated the Tanners' scoring, all three Tanner lines were deserving of credit for their fine two-way play. McCarthy opened the scoring on the back of sustained offensive pressure in the Guelph end. He was also equally brilliant in putting Kri into the clear for the Tanners' second goal with a pass of sublime proportions. Kri, whose early season scoring drought was remedied the previous weekend with a 9- goal outburst in the Mooretown tournament, made no mistake in capitalising on this. opportunity. Taylor McNabb picked up the other assist. Kri tallied again later on passes from Kuenzig and McCarthy. The Tanners' defensive core was solid, led by McCarthy and Scott Hoffman. Coach Malcolm should also take some credit for moving winger Liam Robertson to defence and Alex Wenzel up to the Brandon Massini line. Roberston's speed helped to counter the pace of the Guelph forwards and Wenzel's grit on the left wing helped create scoring chances for his line mates Massini and Scott Weber. Both goalies put in outstanding performances as the end-to-end play offered both teams many opportunities. Joss Warren, in the Acton goal, had one of his best performances of the year, making several key saves. The Tanners will be in tough over the remainder of the season, with back-to-back games against both Burlington and Oakville, as well as a game against top-ranked Hespeler. However, these games should well prepare the team from their OMHA run, which will begin in January, reach tourney finals. The Tanners put in a fine performance in their first tournament of the season, losing in the final to North London 5-1. The Tanners had earlier beaten Port Huron and tied against the 'host Mooretown team. The tournament featured strong performances by several of the Tanners, including most notable Kri, who registered nine goals over the four games. Dillon Creasey also showed tremendous commitment throughout the tournament, creating havoc in front of the opposing net and taking considerable punishment as a result. Riley McGilloway also deserved credit, logging tremendous ice time, not only in centring his line, but also in double shifting to play defence on several occasions. The Mooretown game was of particular significance as Mooretown could be a potential opponent to the Tanners in the OMHA run. The 5-5 tie flattered the home side and the Tanners were deserving of victory. They will meet Mooretown again in this weekend's tournament in St. Thomas and will surely look to score a victory and take. some level of psychological advantage in the post season. Bantam Scores shut out The-Acton Bantam Select team took to the ice Saturday November 16 for their first game of the season on home ice against Erin-Hillsburgh. Scoring early in the first period was Ian Reid who tipped a shot from Nathan Howson to surprise the opposing goaltender and elevate the spirits of the Acton players and fans. Tanner Team The R&M Construction Acton Tanners Peewee AE team increased their winning streak to five games with wins over Arthur and Elora this weekend. The Tanner's defense was solid at both ends of the ice in Acton's first home ice win of the year beating Arthur 6-2. Jamie Campbell opened the scoring on a goal assisted by Jesse Mortensen. Adam Amato scored the second from Drew Backman and Jamie and completed the hat trick with two unassisted goals. Ellis Lavellee scored another with an assist to Amato on a perfectly executed two on one. Cole Fricker scored the other Acton goal assisted by Backman. Good work again in the corners by Josh McDonell, Nathan Bennett and Ryan Faber created some excellent scoring chances. Great checks were given out. by Mortensen, Backman and Jack Matthews. Steven Wolstenholme and Luke van Dinther played solidly at defense while Tyler Bandy made a_ couple end to end rushes. Dirk Van Soelen played well in net making some key saves early but was unable to keep out the shots directed at him by his own team. The winning ways continued against Elora as Acton was able to fight off a determined team to win 3-1. The defense continued to play a large part in the offense when McDonell and Bennett worked the puck back to the point and Matthews buried a low wrist shot past the Elora net minder. The familiar combination of Amato, Lavallee and Campbell combined on the second goal converting on another power play goal. Matthews scored his second of the game when Jake Hnatiw passed the puck to Backman who swung it over to his partner who unloaded another wrist shot that capped-off the scoring. Elora made the game interesting with a late goal but Ben Hess proved too strong, making a number of good saves in the final period. LET US WELCOME YOU! Vetone Wigan.
