THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2003 Syndicate housing plan The next $tep in having Bower Avenue housing, known as the Syndicate Housing, designated as a Heritage Conservation Dis- trict is for Town staff and Heritage Halton Hills to finalize a Syndicate Housing Heritage Conservation District Plan. - Owners of the houses, numbers 69 to 89, all are in support of the heritage district designation, designed to preserve an important aspect of Acton's industrial heritage, and will have the opportu- nity to comment on the heritage district plan. The designation would mean the owners of the houses could not legally change the identified heritage aspects of the ten houses, including the distinctive brickwork, the bay windows, single-light transoms and decorative crown mouldings. Housing holds lifted = Town Council approved bills lifting zoning holds on 534 hous- ing units in Acton last week, a sign that the already busy housing market is about to heat up. : While the developers must still register each of the draft- ap- proved plans of subdivision, lifting the hold on each plan done _ only when the developer has satisfied all the Town's and Re- 'own gion's development conditions. The holding provision was lifted on a total of 183 single family units on 17.7-hectares of land at the south end of the Devon Place development, south of Highway 7 and east of Churchill Road, owned by Acton East Housing Corporation. = North of Highway 7, adjacent to the arena, the hold was lifted on the 227-single family homes in the Rinarin development called Honeyfield. : The hold was also lifted for 74 of 138 draft-approved units for the West Meadows, phase three subdivision on Wallace Street, north of McDonald Boulevard. The hold remains on 64 units in a proposed apartment building, in that development. The 50-unit phase two of the Acto 2 development, off Lasby Lane, north of Mason Boulevard, also had the holding provision lifted. : Bob White, the Town's manager of development, said all of the Jigest subdivisions are close to being registered, and probably will be by the end of the year. Kiln preservation Town Council has signed a management agreement for the resto- ration of the Limehouse Kilns -- other signatories include the Limehouse Kiln Society and Credit Valley Conservation, on whose land many of the kilns are found. Council also endorsed the Kiln Society's plan to apply for On- tario Trillium Foundation funding to help restore a former powder magazine. The main goal of the Society, made up of local citizens, mem- bers of the Bruce Trail Association and local quarries, is to promote the preservation of the lime kilns and related structures through restoration, stabilization or re-creation. Council has al- ready endorsed the Society's intention to try to have the kilns designated as a place of national historic significance. _ There are 15 kilns within Limehouse, all built in the mid-1800s to produce lime by burning limestone. The kilns, located on pri- vate and public land in and around Limehouse, are in various stages of deterioration.
