14 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2003 Peewee 'A' By Warren Edwards Buoyed by two mid-week victories, the Peewee A Tanners recently headed to St. Thomas for their second tournament of the season. Playing in a division which included 'the host side, Mooretown and West Hill, the Tanners went 2-0-1 to qualify for Sunday after- 'neon's final. In the opening match the Tanners forwards played superbly as they overcame an early three goal deficit to win 7-3. With both Shaw and later Warren struggling in goal, the Tanners for- wards responded with a brilliant display, scoring three times in a span of 44 seconds to tie the game 3- Zz In the second period the Tanners struck again with three more goals in the fi- nal five minutes of the period to take a command- ing 6-3 lead. They rallied once more in the third to seal the victory. Acton was lead by McGilloway who had two goals and an assist, McCarthy with two goals, Kri who had a goal and two assists and Gord McKeon with a goal and an assist. Defenceman Tysoe scored his second goal in as many games to complete the Tan- ners' attack. Dylan Creasey, had two assists and Weber also had an_ assist. McGilloway was deserv- ingly named the Tanners' MVP for the match. In their second game the Tanners met Mooretown whom they had earlier faced in the Mooretown tourna- ment two weeks before. In that encounter the teams tied 5-5 but the Tanners felt they deserved the victory. This time they made no mis- take routing their opponents . 8-1 in what was easily the team's best showing of the season to date. Warren who was named the Tanners' MVP of the game, was outstanding in the Acton goal as Mooretown held the advan- tage of play early on. While the Tanners felt fortunate to be tied 1-1 going into the second period they soon erased any doubts in the minds of those watching as to which side was superior, unleashing a magnificent offensive display. Despite Warren's heroics, one could - have made convincing ar- guments that any of Jessy Kuenzig, McCarthy or McKeon were equally de- serving of MVP honours. Kuenzig was brilliant in set- ting up four of the Tanner goals. McCarthy and McKeon each recorded hat tricks. Virtually all their goals were scored within 5 -- 7 feet of the opposing net with no _ opposition defenceman or forward in sight. \ Honourable mentions go . to'McGilloway who had a goal and two assists. Creasey who had a goal and an assist and Kri who chipped in two assists. Two of their four goals in the third were recorded while playing short-handed. Acton went into the third game needing only a tie to reach the final and accom- plished just that in earning a hard-fought 2-2 tie against the host St. Thomas team. A St. Thomas power play goal with two seconds left in the second and a game tying goal with 38 seconds in the third denied the Tan- ners a sweep of their round robin games. The defence shone in a game in which the home side looking to take advantage of local of- ficiating tried to intimidate the Tanners. However, an- chored by veterans McNabb and Hofland as well as new- comers, Tysoe, David Elop and Robertson, the Tanners defence was resolute in its commitment to defending the Tanners goal. His stop on.a point blank -- shot early in the first period may have been the save of the tournament. McCarthy and Kri ac- counted for the Tanners' goals with assists to Kuenzig and McGilloway. Weber, clearly relishing his move to centre, was named the Tan- ners' MVP of the game. In the final, however, the Tanners started slowly and were punished as Markham scored three goals in the first two minutes and 40 seconds of the game. The score could have been worse but for the goaltending of Joss Warren. The Tanners refused to lay down and after taking the Waxers' best shots, began to exert themselves. Their ef- forts were rewarded when McGilloway scored a huge goal to bring them back to 3-1 before the end of the first period. Weber, who was again named the Tanners' MVP of the game, earned the assist. Elop's goal seemed to unsettle the Wax- ers and with just under two minutes remaining in the second, McKeon scored the tying goal on a backhand shot even as being hauled down. Play in the 'third was in- tense with both sides enjoying opportunities, al- though the Tanners held the advantage in play. However it was the Waxers that broke through with a goal midway through the third to take the 4-3 lead that they would hold on to. Warren made two saves in succession but was unable to make the third af- ter a breakdown in the Tanners end. Best week yet for Peewee Tanners By Warren Edwards The Acton Tanners' Heartland Shipping Sup- plies Peewee 'A' team enjoyed their most success- ful week of the year. Playing six games in as many days, the Tanners went 4 -1 -1 including back-to-back wins over Burlington in league play and reaching the finals of the St. Thomas Tourna- ment. It was in the final that the Tanners suffered their only defeat of the week, losing 4-3 to the Markham Waxers in a thriller. The Tanners started the week demolishing Burlington 6 -- 0 at home on Tuesday night in what was a superb performance of skating, passing, defence and goaltending. The sheer pace of the Tanners for- wards set the tone of the game and the visitors were never able to mount any form of sustained attack. Leading the Tanners charge where Dylan Creasey and Bradley Kri who each scored twice. Riley McGilloway was also su- perb with a goal and three assists. The defence was not only solid but also contrib- uted offensively with Scott Hofland scoring one goal and Taylor NcNabb record- ing two assists. Jason Shaw was more than equal to the task in goal recording both continued on page 19
