THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2003 THE NEW TANNER Hunters also love animals To the Editor, It is certainly obvious that your reader Ms. Kollonay's admission to being anit- hunting is true, but I am afraid her outrageous reac- tion proves she does not deal with it as well as she claims. If she were as interested in the hunting issue as she claims, she would be a little more knowledgeable. Hunt- ing in this area on Sundays is not allowed with guns, but bow hunting is. I am sure the "country bump-~ kins" she saw were well within their rights. As for transporting it -- how does she suggest they do it, in- side their vehicles? I suppose she also covers her daughter's eyes in the meat/fish/deli counter de- partments while grocery shopping and begs her not to look at the neatly pack- . aged meat. I suppose she would be just as quick to refuse her 10-year-old daughter a trip to the slaughter house to see how humanely the animals are killed there, or to re- search how they are kept/ fed leading up to this. A hunted deer does not expe- rience the fear of inhumanity that their rela- tives do in a slaughterhouse. Maybe if Ms. Kollonay would do some homework, she would find that hunters are also animal lovers and as environmentally con- science as her daughter is. Hunting has no relationship to these qualities. The li- cence they must acquire pay for most of the Conserva- tion that people and wildlife can enjoy. Without these funds, many would not be kept. My husband respectfully and safely hunts each year. He fills our freezer with venison for our family of seven. How does she think her ancestors fed their fami- lies? My children, as well as. the ones I provide daycare for see that deer and are all growing up with a healthy, Best week yet... continued from page 14 the victory and his second shut-out of the season' The. Tanners then promptly went into Burlington for the second half of the home and home series on Thursday and won 5 -- 2 ina rather chippy af- fair. The Tanners had to beat not only the home side also the officials as they re- ceived nine of the 13 penalties called. McGilloway led the Tan- ners with two goals and Brandyn McCarthy added a single. The Tanners attack was again supported by the defence. Liam Robertson scored his first goal since being moved back to the blue line and David Tysoe playing with greater confi- dence as the season progresses put the game on ice, scoring the fifth goal on a truly inspired rush that saw him split the Burlington defence before blasting a low shot through the legs of the Burlington netminder. Joss Warren was out- standing in the Acton goal earning the victory. He was particularly sharp in mak- ing several key saves while the Tanners were two men short and in the third when the outcome was still in doubt. His stop of a point blank shot with five min- utes left in the third and the Tanners holding a 3 --2 lead came moments before McGilloway's second goal of the game, a brilliant in- dividual effort which took the wind out of the Burlington sails for good. Also worthy of praise was the line of Scott We- ber, Brandon Mansini and Alex Wenzel. While held off the score sheet, the line was superb on the fore check particularly in the third when on three straight shifts they refused to allow Burlington out of their own end, eating over three min- utes on the clock. FISHERMAN'S LANDING open-minded attitude about hunting. They are taught to respect others and animals and are not fanatically pro- tected from _ natural behaviour out of fear they may become unloving, ani- mal hating adults. My final note: I am defi- nitely pro hunting. I realize it is a fact of life. I do not feel hunters are "macho gun-toting people" who feel the need to display their kill. _I feel they should be al- lowed to hunt without being labelled derogatorily by some person who happens to have a different opinion.
